Have ridden on that shoulder once before. Was about the fastest I've ever ridden it seemed.

edit: I snapped this on my last trip down there with Chewyeti

I wouldn't ride there if it had a concrete divider between me and the cars.

I've done it over 50 times. We asked the Hwy Patrol once how many bikers have been hit and without hesitation he said it hasn't happened yet. Two or three times we've rode up to the gate at Pendleton only to be told because of security reasons no bicyclists were being allowed through and had to turn back. Now we don't even bother. I personally think riding the shoulder is fun. Very easy to maintain a 23MPH+ through this section and plenty of room on the shoulder.

Kid is at Pendleton just bought a house in Oceanside and I see them every time I drive down - unfortunately, they ride there like they do in the canyon ride closer to the line. I'm always afraid when a large vehicle passes they're sucked in and down.

Who in their right mind would do that at night??!!!?!

If it's legal for illegals to run across the highway and have signs posted in thier favor than a road rider can use the highway shoulder.

Some may not know, if you are a road rider you can get a pass to ride through Pendleton on Basilone road..

Who says it legal for them them to run across highway. I think the signs are just to warn drivers it could happen, kinda like deer crossing signs.

I do miss the old version of the sign though.

Riding on the freeway is legal in alot of places in Cali...... Basically if its the only connector between citis/towns/provinces ETC... then its legal. PCH has that all over the damn palce, the five has it, Hell you can do it on the ten past cabazon to Palm springs.........

Never heard of cyclist getting hit in any of these locations..... Biggest trick is, you gotta know were to get off at.....

dude, seriously!?! It is illegal for anyone to run across a freeway. If those signs are there; god forbid a human being might have some regard for the life of another human being.

There seems to be a lot of people on this thread that think this is dangerous. Nothing could be further from the truth. That's one of the safest places you could ever ride a bike in truth. It's loud, boring and stressful though.

The danger comes with intersections/driveways and there are none with freeways. Even with the freeway being one of the safest places to ride a bike I will take my chance on side roads with quieter and more peaceful riding. If I get run over I'll at least be calm

No biggy! Anyone who has ever ridden down the California coast has had to ride on the 101.
How can this be any more dangerous than riding in the bike lane on any busy Highway like PCH,GMR,Highway 39 or
the Ortega HWY? There is no cross traffic to worry about so it is actually safer than the city streets!

I prefer to ride the 5 than to go zig zagging on the rollers through the base.

I 15 through the Cajon Pass, there's a short section of freeway (Cleghorn to the 138 ) that I've ridden many times, both directions.
Takes you right past the truck scales though, and that can be fairly intimidating.

215 through Murrieta is legal to ride too, but has a very small shoulder so would be very sketchy with trucks and such. I have only seen one roadie and a dude on a cruiser with a dog in his basket doing it in the 7 years that I have lived out here. Dont think I would be willing to try it.

Done that section a few time and find it very plesant. The 101 after UCSB on the way to SLO gets kind of scary when you have to go through the Mtn tunnel without any shoulder. I've done that a few times too and always get alittle stressed.

The stretch of 15 between the pass and 138 was a hoot, blowing by the slow trucks in the right lane. Even more fun was the 15 down the Baker grade (17 miles in 23 minutes). Ortega from San Juan to Elsinore was not as much fun (until the descent into Elsinore), but the worst freeway I rode was the 60 through the Badlands - that was insane.
