I was driving down to San Diego on the San Diego 5 Freeway earlier this afternoon. All the sudden, I spotted this guy pedaling up ahead on the right shoulder. :-s This guy was in full roadie gear and there wasn't any car stopped on the side before or after I spotted him. I can only assume that he was indeed riding on the side of the freeway and not because his car broke down and he was using it to get help.

Just in case you wonder where exactly was this, this was on Southbound 5 Fwy about 2 miles before Oceanside.

    Anyway, is this legal? :-k

Yes, this section between camp pendleton exit and las pulgas is open to cyclists. There's another short stretch between sorrento valley and genesee that is open also.

in that particular location, I believe that it is allowed, as it is the only public route between San Onofre and Oceanside. not exactly the smartest thing in the world though...

the only other way to get down there is to take the detour through Camp Pendleton, but not everybody can do that (I'm unsure of the exceptions, but you need a valid drivers license/ID card).

as aside: is it just me or is that guy really effing tall?

Yup, at certain times, Camp Pendleton is closed, so you have to take the shoulder of the freeway to get across that area.........from my experience, you have to show ID to use CP detour, and it is only open during the day.

Yes, you do need a ID to go through CP and you need go single file line once on the base or you will be removed from the base(seen that happen few time before) and there are time when we not allow to go through and we are force to go on the I-5 or you don't have the proper ID.

There are sections of the 101 in LA County where cycling is legal (and the 23 in T.O.). Most people never read the signs on the on-ramp but the biggest clue is on the freeway an off ramp sign will say "Bicycles must exit". Conclusion: further back bicycles were allowed on the freeway.

It is also legal on stretches of the 15 and the 52. Maybe other areas, too?

Legal but very dangerous because of drivers taking pictures instead of concentrating on the road.

Yep it legal, I would prefer to take CP route, but like others said you must have ID and you also have to have a helmet on. I remember hearing about a group ride where someone didnt have a helmet or ID and they rode down the 5.

I've been on the 5 when Pendleton was closed, but didn't enjoy it. It was scary having all those cars, trucks and semi's roaring by, and there was a lot of junk in the emergency lane. At one point, Caltrans had a big metal sign blocking the (bike) lane, and you had to ride into the traffic lane to get around it!?! On the plus side, the traffic and exposure was pretty good incentive to put the hammer down and boost the mph.

FYI, my buddy had a hard time buying a train ticket with just a photocopy of his driver's license, so valid ID will come in handy if you want to ride the train home to OC.
