I road ride around Covina, San Dimas, La Verne, Glendora and Azusa and almost all riders say Hi or nod to each other.

Riding around beach communities is a different story.

If it makes any difference, I was riding the road yesterday and waved to a mountain biker and got nothing in return. It's all good, it's not like he owed me a wave or anything. It doesn't make me mad, sad, or feel that I should start a mountain biker attitude thread. People have the right to do what they want...and if they don't want to be polite, so be it.

People usually smile, giggle a little, and say hello back to me, but maybe it has something to do with the beer can stuffed into the front of my shorts or the $100 bill I sometimes tape to my crotch.

    Or not.

Two different attitudes from two different user groups. While on the trail its actually rare to see another rider coming up or going down. My spot's mainly in the Gabe's so it may be different in other area's,but is rare you would see more than 5 other riders on a given weekend ride. Even less on a weekday ride. Mainly singletrack trails lends itself to isolation. Either you are going up or if you're descending it may be the opposite. You may even run into a few other riders at a saddle and spark up a quick conversation before moving along. Not to much effort to nod or wave to 4 or 5 people on a given ride.
On the road is a whole different story. Very common on a 50,75,100 mile ride you run into, pass, ride in opposite directions of a dozen or more riders at a given fitness spot(ie. climbing, descending). It just may get old acknowledging every rider you come across. I myself try to give a nod or a little finger raise as I find it the right thing to do. MTB'ers usually are pretty good at noddin back, roadies not so much. Dont take it personal, its not a fraternity. Just my .02 cents

Funny that you guys bring up how rude roadies are. I have NEVER had a mountain biker respond to me when I say hello or wave from atop my road bike.

I admit that I don't always greet others when riding my road bike. Sometimes I barely have enough breath to stay upright, let alone throw my balance by nodding my head. And, do you really want me to throw you a big ole smile/nod when I've been aerobically working, with snot oozing down my face and sweat flinging from my brow? ;)

    Bullshit!

If they don't acknowledge you, chase them down and kick the living shit out of them. If that doesn't fix the problem at least you'll feel better.

When I road bike I am better then those lowly mountain bikers and when I mountain bike, no way, would I wave to a flockin roadie.

This freekin thing has gone on for about as long as there have been mountain bikes. Let's say we give it a rest, and just let it go. Does it really matter that much if someone ignores your wave/nod or whatever?

Ever try to wave to someone after you've gone as hard as you can for a couple hours. Believe me you don't care at that time and the guys/gals who don't wave, screw em.

Its all in my head....Roadie attitude....MTB Elite

 Im gonna go out on a limb, and be brutally honest, sometimes when I see anyone on a bike more expensive that mine or cooler or whatever,I think somewhere inside I want to be as cool as them,as fast as them,I feel rejected or discouraged if I cant get a wave or a nod cause inside thats affirmation that i am one of them, however i have learned about myself and like life it takes Hard work and determination to get to a great fitness level or to buy a really expensive bike. I wave now anyway cause im a member of STR ,and I think most STR members wave back! Enjoy yourself on your bike, this is our society and all are welcome.

Typically, roadies are the biggest a-holes I have encountered. I'm a mtn biker first but picked up a skinny bike about a year ago. The rolling billboard outfits, bad attitudes, they think they own the road (and the Starbucks), its really bad. I rarely tell anyone I road ride.

i was riding on old topanga to get to the trail last weekend, two roadies were heading the other way. the first one waved and said "hi", the second one said "howdie" and flashed the "hang loose" hand signal... i almost fell off my bike.

maybe they were f#$%ing with me?? :-s

This is your problem, you already have a chip on your shoulder. Why do you have to be anything....why can't you just be a cyclist?

When I shop at Trader Joes I try to say hi to all my fellow shoppers because we're sharing the same experience. But most people are too preoccupied with their shopping, or otherwise they just look at me like I'm crazy. One guy was looking really hard for a box of cereal he likes and didn't hear me say 'hi there.' What an arsehole! He could have just nodded, right?
