I bike commute a couple of times a week to work. I pass many roadies on the way and often give a head nod or say hello--which seems to be sort of par for the course with mountain bikers acknowledging each other.

By in large, I get ignored by roadies, who ride past stone faced and act like they didn't hear anything.

Am I misreading this, or do the majority of roadies act too cool for school when they are on their bikes?

I don't know where you ride mountain bikes, but 75% of the people I say hello to on the trail, ignore me!!! It is not just roadies, it's people in general. ;)

pretty normal occurrence in my experience.
god forbid you be riding a bike with suspension and give them a nod, you might get a Gu packet thrown in your face

Bingo!! I think with the more expensive bikes they ride the worse they are. Very arrogant. Not all of them, though, but more than you'd want. When I can I like passing right by them on my $1,400 Kona Zing aluminum stock road bike with carbon fork.

I try to say hi to everybody and smile.... I have been riding and racing road for years and consider myself more of a Roadie then anything... I love the mountain too and there should be no room for that kind of attitude... Most of the guys that don't acknowledge you think they are fast... what they have to remember there is ALLWAYS somebody better and faster than you!

Sigh....it's called sustained aerobic exercise. Road riding if done with training in mind, doesn't leave a lot of space for interaction...it's not social, and again....can really kick your butt. Don't take it personally.

You just have to be more forcefull......we make it a game when we run across riders like this.....on road bikes and mountain bikes.

    Alot of people:

    a) Don't hear what you say
    b) By the time they answer, you have already passed them and can't hear thier response
    c) Checked out and are oblivious to what is going on around them
    d) Are just unfriendly.....doesn't matter whether they are riding bikes, waiting in line at the grocery store....etc.

They are probably eighty miles into 100 mile training ride and not really into talking to anyone....

Think that's just people in general but there are days I get a lot of wave, node and hello from roadies across PCH!

Then last saturday I was on Black Star saw tons of MTB riders and less than half even bothered to look my way.:?:

Hey, if you're so absorbed in your road bike riding that you can't NOD YOUR HEAD to someone, then you are too absorbed in your riding to notice that soccer mom in her SUV who is about to turn left in front of you.

Can't we just make this thread a sticky and then rudely reply "Use the SEARCH button!" next time someone asks? :?:

Note to my friends: When and if the day comes when I don't behave cordial and stop greeting other trail users, please kick me in the balls as hard as you can and never talk to me again. I can't imagine ever being too busy or so damn into "training" that I would neglect basic human decency and courtesy for fellow mankind. We make it a point to go out of our way and say hello (and even make small talk) with other trail users and I'd say it's very well received and reciprocated 90-95% of the time. I realize this is not the case with roadies but not always. Make the difference and be the exception to the unwritten rule. Change happens in small increments.

Riding a road bike gives one the ability to distinguish self important whiners....maybe that's why they don't wave?
