At least it wasn't your face!
Were they worried about flesh eating bacteria or just any old nasty bug?

I bought these SixSixOne 2x4 pads for exactly that reason:

    T
hey slide right into my Camelback for the climbs and XC stuff and they go on in like 30 seconds for the descents. The sleeve parts whisk away sweat just fine, they're not hot nor uncomfortable.

I bought them a couple years ago after my bike disappeared beneath me, too, sending me sliding on my forearms across the gravel.

Yikes. Thanks for posting this. Good luck to a full and fast recovery.

I fell and separated my shoulder a little over a year ago and managed to slice open my forearm on the rough cement in the streambed in Aliso that I fell in. It was a stupid fall on the main fireroad running through Aliso, my front wheel apparently hit some moss in the stream and threw me down hard enough to separate my shoulder and make me slide across the rough cement to pull my elbow pads up my arm and drag my forearm across the cement. But thankfully I was wearning knee pads and my other arm was ok. I never had stitches before in my life, but had to have them to close my arm and they got infected (pseudomonas, probably from the stream although possibly from the hospital too) so healing took a while and having the stitches taken out hurt worse than the initial cut or having them put in.

I skipped wearing pads one day in Aliso about 9 months later and unkowingly lost a bolt in my cleat in one shoe and couldn't clip out while climbing Cholla and managed to fall with my body weight on the elbow on the arm I hurt before, aggravating my shoulder and popping open my elbow. I didn't need stitches, but that ended my ride that day and I had to nurse it.

I'm fully recovered now, and have been for awhile, but wear my pads every ride now. I figure I own them and they'll do me no good lying at home while I'm on the trail. They won't prevent every injury, but they definitely help minimize injuries.

And everyone falls and gets injured eventually, even riders as skilled and experienced as the OP.

But I honestly have been slacking on wearing my pads lately as I needed to wash them and kept forgetting too and after a while I just couldn't bear putting them on... But they're all clean now and they will be back on for my next ride!

    Thanks for the reminder!

Wow! That is a gnarly wound but looks like your doctor is quite skilled. I tend to chew up my forearms especially my right one. I started to wear forearm/elbow pads as a result but put them away during the heat of summer. I'm going to start wearing them again. And maybe get some knee ones too (many gnar pics of STR folks' knee rips). Heal quickly!!!

The big fear is MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus). It kills more people every year than AIDS.

Dude, sorry about your nasty injury. I wish you a prosperous recovery!

I would bet this is the case with lots of people. I only wear my knee pads occasionally while everything else just collects dust. It should be time to get the duster out....

I always wear knee pads and gloves (since I crashed without my gloves a few months ago) but I think I may need to look into some arm protection also. Get better soon.

I always wear my G-Form knee pads and gloves, but I am looking to invest in some G-Form elbow pads. That looks disgusting. :-( Heal up!

I ride with and have been riding with Doug since last year training for CC - I have never seen him crash - Those photos are gross - I am glad you did not break a bone - I have those foam elbow pads and going to start wearing them. Doug is a very careful rider and obviously experienced. He is fast and crazy, like most of us! I guess anything can happen. If you look at how often you ride, Doug, guess you gotta fall now and then - My hole in my leg and 7 stitches seem pretty lame compared to this! My broken femur did not even have blood! lol - Hurry and get well - you have a lot of people waiting on you to help them train -

Ouch! Man, sorry to hear this. Hang tough and heal up quickly!

Just make sure you come up with a detailed story about how you were boosting a huge gap/drop or somehow saving a kid/small animal when the injury occurred.

Wow, Doug, finally found a way to slow you down, huh? Glad you're on the mend and considering all the miles and time you put into saddle time you've been very fortunate (might have somethingto do with your skill level too). Take care and heal well.
