I was on Santiago Canyon when emergency and forest rangers flew by me w their lights and sirens on. I rode STT but when I got to the gate I turned around (just had that uneasy feeling).

I was hoping it wasn't serious ... so sad.

Apparently it's still going on. OCSD "Duke" helicopter located the rider from the air and ground units are responding to Main divide from Maple Springs and S. Main Divide. I'll keep y'all updated if I hear anything further...

Just got word the coroner was flown up... :-( He was found around the trailhead to Upper HJ and initially reported by another mtbr between 1 and 3. If anyone knows anything further, id like to know and I'll continue to update.

I was on the ride with the Mtn. Biker who died today. He was about 200 yards west or south on the MD of LHJ. I met this guy (Dont know if I should say his name) about a month a go after doing a ride at the base of ITT, we talked and introduced him to Geoladdrers. We did some texting and PMing and today he decided to join us for an EPIC adventure. He talked about doing the VQ and Ultraquest in years past so figured he was not a novice Mtn. Biker. Don't want to go into details, its still fresh and confusing to loose a fellow mtn. biker.
The Dept. of Forestry & OCS have there heads up there asses. What a cluster F trying to get his body down. God for bid anything happen and immediate assistance be needed. OCS Helicopter didn't know where the vehicle was coming from to extricate the body, first it was coming from the Ortega, then Silverado after we told them that there is still a foot of snow and doubtful that they could make it with out chains, and still thought they wouldn't be able to make it. Then they came up with the idea of carrying the body a mile or two from north of LHJ to just past the exit of UHJ to the awaiting helicopter. We told them over and over to come up ITT but our advice wasn't taken, and we were waiting for the coroner to drive from sanata ana to Black Star to get on the helicopter to come and confirm that he was deceased. what a waste of time. i hope the family was told sooner than later. waiting and wondering where dad, brother, husband is so late. How horrible!

So sorry you had to experience it all. However, how wonderful to be out playing when you pass on - I hope I'm doing just the same when my clock runs out.

Goldrunner: Sorry to hear that! I thank you for the update... We are such a small and close community of friends and felt I needed to share in case he was riding solo and someone was looking for him. I wish the family and your group of friends my best. -Kevin

Im confused. So they went up to investigate a dead body, yet another person says what sounds like he was there when the person died. Those sound like they would be handled differently.

Not necessarily, once a dead body is called in, it has to be investigated before being removed from the scene. The Sheriff / Coroner's office needs to give that authority after the vic is pronounced deceased with no foul play. Maybe this is why it was such a slow and unorganized extraction? Either way, he was THERE and I was getting the info over the air from a colleague.

I hope this helps ya mfoga.

Thanks for the update during this difficult time Goldrunner. As I train for VQ, it never crosses my mind that I could (might) never return to my family, friends, life after a mtb ride. Even with all of the crashes, close calls, and even being in my 40's.......last thing in my mind is death. Scary. Thanks again Goldrunner.
