Emergency crews airlifted a cyclist to Mission Hospital Sunday after the man injured his head while biking and crawled to a nearby road to find help, an Orange County Fire Authority spokesman said.
OCFA officials received a call at 4:16 p.m. from a passer-by on Trabuco Creek Road who found a man in his mid-20s suffering from head and face injuries, fire spokesman Greg McKeown said.
According to McKeown, the man had been biking in Holy Jim Canyon and crawled to the road after sustaining the injuries.
Workers from the OCFA Trabuco Canyon fire station, Fire Reserves and Cleveland National Forest responded to the call.
After crews prepared the man for an airlift, an OCFA Helicopter transported him to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center at 5:23 p.m. as a trauma patient.
Officials would not release his name and his condition is unknown.

I was just on the OC Register site and saw the following story posted:

    http://www.ocregister.com/articles/fire-road-ocfa-2583608-hospital-mission

For a second I thought it was the official scoop on Ken's accident on Rock-It; then I noticed it happened in an area near Holly Jim. This guy was airlifted to Mission hospital too :-k

Edit: I guess they merged the threads 8-[

Holy crap. Riding alone in places like that is not a good idea. What a pimp though, crawling to the road.

When are we ALL going to get the memo:

    DO NOT RIDE ALONE

This has been a common read this year, with a couple of deaths reported nationally, one here in WA just last month.

I hear ya socal, but is it really possible to never ride alone? i ride several days a week and unfortunately no one else near me wants in on that schedule. I'm not going to stop my rides because I have no friends. The cold hard reality is that riding MTB is risky and I might get biffed badly, maybe even die. I accept that and take my risks as I see them. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying its not a bad idea, I just don't know if it is practical to say "never" ride alone. That being said, I have a 5:30a ride tomorrow in Palm Springs...goat trails. If anyone wants to join me come on out M, W, F. :?:

    Sorry for the guy.

Yes it's stupid to ride alone but i'm sure we've all done it at one point or another. I'm just glad that the story had a somewhat happy ended. He couldn't blackout and died out there...

Riding alone isn't necessarily stupid. I do it somewhat regularly. I'd prefer to ride with others, bu that doesn't always happen.
I hope I'd have the ability to self rescue like that.

I think you mean Levi Leipheimer for Road I.D.

Just got one free for doing an event up north next week-end! Pretty good & well made!
As for a whistle, I got hurt once and my friends were off ahead quite a distance. I pulled out my whistle and blew it but no one could hear it and after awhile I felt like an idiot so I crawled back on my bike and one legged pedaled out! Then two guys came up behind me and helped but they never heard a whistle!
They must help at some point but if you're injured, it takes lots of energy to blow non-stop!

btw- i ride alone lots too. i just don't do "dumb stuff" like we did today.

Road ID added a web feature where you can update with an 800#. Although this brand is less expensive. But what good does it do if no one finds you for days?

The SPOT GPS emergency system seems like a good idea. Like Life Alert for the sports set. I've fallen and I can't get up. Gabe rode Holy Jim alone on Saturday and I didn't know till after the fact! GRRR!!

The extreme one lets you tell the database where your riding and from what time to roughly what time so it will send an email to your emergency contact so they are aware of where you are and what your doing so if you dont show, they dont leave you for the bears to nibble on!!

    Kinda cool

I'm sorry for the guy too but I will continue to ride alone and think it better to risk injury on a ride alone than to stay off the bike. I just ride more conservatively, wear pads and let someone know where I am and when I expect to be home.
