Hubby and I will be up in Idyllwild on Sunday in a few weeks and wanted to take the road bikes for a spin. If anyone has any suggestions with mileage ranging from probably 15-30 mi, please share! Longer suggestions are cool also, just not sure how much time we'll have to escape for a ride. Thanks.
You can't go wrong in that area - but I'd advise you to take the MTB's as well. We recently rode up Thomas Mountain and down the Ramona trail - one of the best rides I ever did. Search for the route on Geoladders. Road riding - the 38 (??) highway has some incredible views. Best get there and have a drive around to see what blows your hair back. You're gonna love it
Yeah, I wouldn't mind doing Hurkey also. Not sure if I'll have a bike to ride Thomas - Ramona on. I think it's a bit too much (for me) on my rigid SS. I could probably do one lap at Hurkey. We'll only be up there one day, and since we've checked out most of the trails (except isomata area) on the mountain bikes (Hurkey, Ramona Trail, Idyllwild Spring Challenge trails) we wanted to see some new stuff on the road. Thanks for the suggestion!
About 5 weeks or so back there were alot of trees down on the 1st section of the Hurkey Creek course (Keen camp climb) I'm sure they'll be cleared away by now as people will soon be practising out there for the spring races/24hr races. Can't wait to ride some of the other Hurkey Creek stuff
Take the mountain bikes...One of my favorites, Ernie Maxwell Trail. Short Trail but way nice. Easy to find upper trailhead at Humber Park. Very close to the peak in my last picture, maybe two miles from Idllywild. We do a point to point ride from Idyllwild to Hurkey Creek. It starts at Humber Park goes down Ernie Maxwell then a horible climb up towards Tahquitz Peak then sweet downhill on South Ridge Trail to Hurkey Creek. Some of the best So-Cal has to offer. You also have Alvin Meadows in Idyllwild, lots of tree removal and trails hard to find. Dean
Yeah, anyone want to show us around? I'd actually like to sign up for the Idyllwild Spring Challenge this year. Good courses for sure. I've heard of Alvin Meadows, but not Ernie Maxwell. We've never done Humber either.
I love showing people new trails, when I go up there I like camping for the weekend at Hurkey Creek. STR Camping trip would be great and night rides on the 24-hour course...good stuff. Dean
Do we want to do a weekend camping trip? If so lets start talking about dates when I get back form Arizona. Dean
I'll help out buddy. I remember that day well. That climb back up wasn't that bad Steppie! And breakfast never tasted so good. Ernie Maxwell, is a very fun trail, but I'd have to hit early as there can be a slew of hikers on it. Not overly tech, but a LOT of fun. Like Dean was saying this requires a camping trip with Ernie M and the Southridge trail to Hurkey and back to camp, then follow it up the next day with a Thomas Mt/Ramona ride. I am so in!!!
Yes we want a camping trip. I really hope I can make the dates work out. Maybe March 31-April 1st? Remember the 23-25 IMBA Trail Crew is in town to work on Middle Merrill on Saturday and ride on Sunday.
Dean, We wanna go, just don't make it the weekend of March 31st. After that, we're good to go. Besides, the later we wait, the warmer it'll be at night = )
