I just calendared what I think is going to be a gem of a ride coming up in March: http://www.socaltrailriders.org/forum/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=3840&day=2014-3-15

A real solid ride a bunch of locals and myself are trying to put together. Focus is on having a blast and seeing some new sights. Not a straight ahead mountain bike ride, definitely not a suit up in spandex road ride, more of a mixed-surface/gravel-grinder sort of a set up. A big bouncy 29er would not be fun on the road portion of it (30 miles!) and a modern crabon fibre road bike would really bog down on the trails. So nobody has the advantage, except the guy/gal on the cross bike w/ 33mm knobs! I hope some of you can come and check it out. There's no cost, although we do have a registration page for it so we can plan for food & festivities afterwards and hope folks chip in a couple bucks for the food. We'll have beer from local brewer Ritual as well. Consider yourselves invited!

That's great! I'm really pretty excited about it and planning it being a great day. Hopefully it will have enough traction to be an annual event!

how steep are the climbs? 4300+ in 63 miles is definitely not bad, but just wondering about the gearing on my cx

    looks fun

Eric and Andrew: I don't have the turn by turn route updated, as we're cutting out the Mentone SART section and adding 38 Special climb on Crafton as well as riding up Elevator and down Jackrabbit in Scott Canyon.

But the basic map and elevation profile can be seen here: http://redlands-strada-rossa.blogspot.com/2013/12/the-route_16.html Obviously zoomed out quite a bit, but you can get the general idea of what it's going to look like.

With those changes above, it'll probably be a mid 90km ride, so still some distance to it! I ride my road bike on it with a 34X30 low gear. I prefer it with my CX bike and a 24X32 low option. None of the climbs are particularly steep, but for me they add up.

A CX bike with some sort of knobbie on it is definitely recommended, although I know a lot of guys are riding it with road bikes. I think they're going to be less than enthusiastic about when they get out there though. I think something like Clement X'plor MSO would be an awesome tire if your bike can fit it. Challenge Alamanzo if you're limited in size.

    Thanks for checking it out!!!

I'm aiming for the rolling bike party vibe, but with some awesome back roads and trails thrown in. Everything is working out great so far!

There's a good chance of it. The ride is going to be tougher than people think. The roadies signing up just don't have any idea what they're getting into. We're going to start posting some "Danger Will Robinson, Danger!" warnings, and I think that will get some people to back out.

Thanks I hope I can get in. Does anyone have a suggested gearing for a singlespeed cross bike?

My buddy's going to ride it on his SSCX, currently w/ 39X18 set up. He mgiht go to 39X20 though. A 2:1 ratio would be pretty good, with the obvious compromises. A White Ind DOS ENO 17/19 would be nice to give you a couple options.

I got an e-mail update yesterday. It mentioned Peter's Canyon as a good training ride????

It's pretty cool that there will be pre-rides for the course but kinda tough to make most of them from OC on a weekday. Does anyone want to go out and pre-ride some of it on a Saturday or Sunday?

I'd also recommened Telegraph and generally banging around the trails in CHSP. Especially riding there and back before the trails to add some miles onto it.

Pre-order T-shirts are now available as well, and they look mah-velo-us!

Is there a link to where we can order the T-shirts? I think I signed up for one when I registered, but I certainly didn't pay. And I think I ordered a grey and blue and I prefer the grey and red now that I've seen it.
