Does anyone know where to go to dispose of old tubes and tires, do I just go to my local recycling center and is there a fee.

Bike Empire (BJammin's shop) in Poway takes them. They send them to a rubber recycler.

I usually toss tires in the blue bin... have no idea what the city does with them though...

I usually keep old tubes... they sometimes come in handy as makeshift bungie straps or tie downs or as chainstay protectors, or any number of other uses.

B & L in Point Loma has a bin you can put them in. I once saw a guy put a pickup truck bed full of them there.

I believe PacMan and OffRoadie have the right answer, I looked on the San Diego gov recycling website, I didn’t see KENDA Nevegal 2.35 Dual Tread Compound listed as a Blue Bin recyclable item.
I also liked drclark ideas to reuse the tubes

Take them to any local tire store such as Firestone ect... Im sure they will have no prob taking them, dont take up much space compared to all the car tires they have.

I was thinking of dropping the tires off at a tire store, but I thought they might charge me a disposal fee the same as they do for car tires.

on a side note, a old inner tube is handy for strapping a light and wedges to your structure helmet, or to secure hose bundles.... if your into that sort of thing...

Last time I was in Rock N' Road Cyclery I dropped off some old tires in their recycle box by the front door, and got a free water bottle. I got a few more tires to drop off now. I just need to find a place that'll recycle old water bottles. :-k

    Tube/Tire recycling?

Ok...this is an issue that's been on the back burner for me and I need to move it up (the wife is tired of extra tubes laying around). Do any shops in OC/Long Beach recycle used inner tubes and tires? I know for car tires they have to be disposed of properly...but what about bike tubes/tires?:?: I've seen art made from old tubes/tires and even out of state places that will recycle.....anybody know of a local place?:?: Please post if you do or have any ideas about PROPER disposal of used tubes/tires! Thnx!

Shop owners/managers? here's another chance to shine and gain customers!

yup, I have quite a collection going myself. Tubes I wanted to patch and haven't, tires that have a little life left, but not enough tread to continue using them. :?:

Your concern for the environment is rad! I will look into this, but in the meantime-

    Chainstay protector?
    Downtube protector?

In Whittier, every house/trash customer gets a blue trash can for recyclables. I put my old tires and tubes in there.

Is there anything similar in Seal Beach?

yes...but wasn't sure about the rubber recycling...they would not accept car tires AND I've seen them throw trash into the recycling before....I'll contact the city again...but hoping a shop would be doing it so I could by new/recycle old...thnx though!

This is a topic that I'd be willing to research more. I poked around a little just now and got some interesting responses.

Coates in Pomona told me they recycle them through the city dump, but when I called both Claremont and Pomona they said they do not accept rubber materials for recycling. At first the guy said I could just throw them in trash, so I'm not sure if he really knew what he was talking about. Kinda disappointed in their response if it was made up.

I called REI in Rancho Cucamonga and they said they recycle through Alchemy Goods. It was a slightly odd conversation though; at first he said they'd only accept 26" tires/tubes, then later he said they'd accept 700c, but only 32 width, and he didn't want to tell me 700c at all at first because he was afraid I'd bring in too many.

There are rubber recyclers in the area, so I'm interested to see what others know or find out. If nothing exists we should move towards establishing something between rubber recyclers and local shops.
