I took my bike to the shop the other day and i was having problems with the lower pulley, the guy told me i wore it out.
but my question is how often do thes wear out, my bike is only 4 months old, and i have road it lets just say twice a week for 4 months,

how can i wear one out so fast? could it have been defected fromt he get go?

it cost me $25 bucks for a new one, and $10 for labor, when it took him 2 seconds to put it in, he could have just explained to me how to do it and saved me the $10 bucks. :?:

I have a old XTR derailluer that has been on 4 bikes and has thousands of miles on it, it even has a missing tooth and is running fine.

Same I have an x-7 that barley has teeth left on the jockey pulley and the other one. Still works fine.

I thought the same thing, i even questioned the guy and told him it had to be defective, and it should be covered under my parts warranty, but they said no only the actual mechanical part itself, like the dereailleur itself.

Yeah, i agree with you both, i tried to call today, told the guy that answered the phone my problem he said he didnt agree that i would have to talk to the mechanic manager guy, was holding for a few minutes and decided that its obvious the guy on the phone was telling him all that i said and i wasnt going to win.

so i will just not even go there anymore, even though i get free tune ups for a year. but i will figure out how to do that on my own

Not all pulleys are created equal. The good ones use bearings and the cheap ones use plastic or brass bushings. The plastic bushing type can go bad fast. All it takes is dirt.

Best thing you can do is let everyone here know what shop it is.

Thats kinda lame on the shop. My XO has been on a couple different bikes, is 4-4 1/2 years old, pulley looks worn, but works fine.
If you bought your bike from them (did you?) they should be really cool about it. Either way I don't think I would be spending much more of my money at this shop if I were you. I'm sure they get the whole, "but its only this many months old" all the time and are now desensitized to actual small issues. Or it could be the shop is not making much money and really need to rip you off to keep the lights on. Who knows why these things actually happen, other than its a lack of integrity and they've gotten away with it alot. Whatever, it sucks, and isn't right. But there is a possibility that there was some unusual wear and tear on the pulley that he didn't explain to you well enough. Like maybe a branch at some point in time got caught in it and gouged the crap out it...thats not warrantable, but you would have noticed that before you took it in.
Sorry to hear about your plight either way.
I guess I was just thinking out loud :)

I've had them go bad fairly quickly before. Usually they last pretty long though. Sometimes sh1t happens. Don't blame the shop.

The derailleur is a Deore XT, just a stock one, and the shop is Jax, i havent had a problem there yet, but this is all its gona take, i have been to adrenaline shop and they are frikkin awsome over there.

edit to add the problem, the pulled kept derailing my chain in the cage causing my chain to catch the derailleur and pull it forward and it would release and slap back.

Sounds like Jax, probably took awhile to get the pulley too. Not sure how it could take a dump that quick but might have been gouged due to poor alignment. I am assuming the problem has not recurred?

Three things can cause the pulleys to were so quick...

    1. Very law quality derailleur.

    2. Incorrect chain length.

    3. Incorrect derailleur cage size.

I can't tell what I (as a shop) would do, because none of my customers have one of the above. If they had a pulleys issue, it's because someone else did it, so... I charged them ;)

Did they fix the problem by changing out the pulley?
