Just read through the whole thread. I agree with this: "punk wasn't a set of musical parameters, it wasn't a term for what type of clothes you wore.....and that was the great thing about it! punk rock was about immediacy, intensity, honesty, expression, exploring things that interested you, and exploring them really hard" - Vince Meghrounir Mostly, I don't think the music has to be necessarily aggressive. To me, the spirit of punk is alive through out the history of music. Chuck Berry, early Elvis, Miles Davis, Coltrane, the list goes on and on. To me, the accepted standard "sound" of what is considered punk rock is really tired. Some stuff I consider punk, w/o the cliche. <span style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); background-color: rgb(250, 250, 250);">
I'm sorry shawndoh. I'm really trying to follow where you're going with this but you lost me. An acoustic cover of a heavy metal song is not punk in my book, not by a long shot. I like Apocalytica's covers of Metallica too but that's not punk. The other stuff wasn't even close to what me or I'm sure a lot of others consider punk. As far as your quoted quote from Hotchkiss goes... I will agree that it stems from the person that considers themselfs "punk" attitude not to go with the flow, to look at things through a different set of lens...
I hear ya. A lot of it is point of view. Traditional flemenco/classical/nylon string guitar players would consider that Metallica cover to be outrageous, in a way. A punk way to approach the instrument. I get that the more traditional sound of punk is, simple distorted guitar, clabby bass and drums. Is Johnny Cash not at least 1 part punk? To me, it's about the attitude, not the dress. Know what I mean?

You nailed it. It's simple. You hear it and you know, you feel it... That's why we both love Johnny. I just wanna say thanks for hittin on this "what IS punk" topic. Brought it up in post #126 but no one touched it. I could give a shit less bout being right. I'm a bigger fan of the debate/conversation on the matter.
In more ways than one I guess. I just saw the make-up play a reunion show and that was a free form bum-out. There was some thirty-something's 12-year-old doing devil horns and head banging next to me.
