    Gents,

I've been training on the actual trails with my single speed with the goal of gradually building up my distance. As of last Saturday, I am up to 30 miles/4.5 hours. Not sure if doing this on SS is a bit too ambitious, but I plan on plugging away. Rode to Old Camp on my SS today. That was a blast.

Looks like most of the trails will be closed this weekend, so I plan on doing two laps of "Fullerton Super Loop" (weather and trail conditions permitting) which will bring the total distance to about 36.

I too am planning to join this evening but I will do the 25 mile instead of 50 mile. I've talked to a friend of mine that had done this before to get more insight into this event. She mentioned you not only have to account for riding time to cover the course but also have to account for the backup of other riders when riding through single track areas during the course. This is a big event and so there will be many other riders on the course and there are times that you have to slow down to get through certain sections. Also, she said make sure to finish in time to join the festivity at main area. I think the festivity starts from 12PM all the way to 4PM. My friend said there are riders that took way more time to finish the course and ended up couldn't join the festivity because they were winding down by the time the late riders rolled in.

    Just my 2 cents.

    Cheers,

Finishing the 50 is just my personal goal since I did the 25 which I think is easily within reach for most riders.

As far as single tracks are concerned, I think there are too few to really matter. I think the longest stretch is Cow and Live Oak trails of Whiting, and some parts of Dove Canyon, but not very many. The trails are mostly fire roads wide enough for riders to pass others. The first 30 minutes or so will look like a walkathon, but the riders will spread out.

I hope to roll in between 2 and 3 which still gives me enough time to enjoy the festivity. Would rather finish my personal goal than party more, but that's just me.

A few years back we did the 25 mile ride (the route was modified due to rain damage). I originally thought about doing the 50 but I am glad I didn't. On the last climb, my legs were like rubber and I barely made it back. As a comparison we had friends (very strong riders) that did the 50 mile and they finished it in the same amount of time that it took us to do the 25 miles. ;)

Project Rwanda 25 & 50 Mile Ride on 4/30/11 - Update re: New Route and Grand Prize

We are about 5 weeks away from the big Project Rwanda fundraiser ride. This is the 5th annual ride, and we continue to grow the event! The planning committee has been working hard to finalize the route and get sponsors and take care of the million details to pull off this great event.

If you haven't heard, we have our new route posted! This is very exciting as we will be in Whiting, O'Neill, and Casper's Park. See link:

    http://www.geoladders.com/show_route.php?route=44745

In addition, we have our GRAND PRIZE for the raffle. This bike is AWESOME.
    See link:

Target is 600 total riders, so if you haven't signed up yet, please go to www.50mileride.com to get registered and signed up.

It's going to be a great event for our mountain bike community, and we hope to see you all there!

    Thanks
    Jeff

(BTW - I am soooooo going to win this bike! ) :)

    Question...

Is this ride supported or self supported? I went through the website and didn't find the answer...

This is the only mention I could find about the aid station:

Starting at Cook’s Corner, this full route will head over to Whiting Ranch for some double and single track action, plus a bit more climbing too just for fun. Then we return along the Aliso Creek bike trail, pass under El Toro Rd, and climb into the back side of O’Neill (like we have done in previous years). We then proceed through and out of O’Neill near the RSM lake, and make our way to the Dove Canyon waterfall. Then we’ll ride the ridge trails all the way to Caspers Wilderness Park, dropping down Star Rise and catching trails including Bell Canyon, Oso, Cougar, and back to Bell Canyon. At the end of Bell Canyon we arrive at a parking lot and rest rooms that will be our outermost checkpoint and refueling/aid station. From there we proceed up East Ridge all the way to Cougar/Oso, back on Bell Canyon and up Star Rise, tracing our route all the way back to the Dove Canyon waterfall (an aid station will be there as well). After refueling, we ride a short distance along Plano Trabuco Road, and return to O’Neill Park (where we exited earlier in the ride). We retrace our route, tackle a couple more climbs, and head back to Cooks Corner for some well-earned rest and recreation.

Last year for the 25 miler, there were 4 aid stations along the way. I think for the 50 miler, there was another one in the parking lot of Caspers. The volunteers who manned (and womanned) the aid stations were absolutely phenomenal.

According to the information page on the route, the ride will include a 1/4 mile of "hike a bike section." Awesome!

4/3/11 Bell Canyon Trail closed beyond the Starr Rise Trail junction. Ranger had the trail "yellow taped," just beyond. HAB water crossing. Starr Rise Trail to West Ridge now has three water crossings. I discovered my feet did not get as wet with the frame suspension locked out. Picture of the first water crossing at Starr Rise Trail, however, HAB through the sand. West Ridge, not bad.
