I got an email about the added route in Whiting. The map has not been updated (but they did show the map of Whiting). I've been to the website and GeoLadders for the complete map. I guess I could piece the old GeoLadders map with the new Whiting Map but I was hoping someone has done an update and I've just missed it.

I Haven't seen the updateyet but would love to see why they are going to ride in whiting. Are they going to keep it east side only or will west side be open?

Here is the email I received today.

We're making history with our 5th Annual Rwanda Ride. We'll be the first major cycling event that takes riders through 3 (count 'em) three OC Parks. You already know and love our route through O'Neill and Caspers Parks. Now, we've added a mini-tour of Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park into our event!

Rain damage to the Arroyo Trabuco Trail means that section will be closed for several more weeks. Bummer, because that was the only way back to O'Neill and the finish of our event. But I love it when a challenge becomes an opportunity for something even better . In our effort to find additional trail miles, we contacted Whiting Ranch. Turns out they are thrilled about adding their popular park into our event route. How cool is that? We'll still stage and finish at Cook's Corner. But now all our riders (both 50 and 25 milers) will start out by heading to Whiting for some fun new trails. We'll get our needed mileage in, and a bit more climbing too just for fun, before we return back to the Aliso Creek bike tunnel and on to our "normal" climb into O'Neill Park.

We recently hosted a training ride through our new 25 mile route, and everyone thought this year's route is our best ever! Click on this http://www.wagraphics.com/downloads/Whiting-final.pdfWHITING RANCH MAP to see what we've added. NOTE: the Dove Canyon waterfall will be a major aid station, and will become the turnaround point for our 25 milers. Riders will then ride along Plano Trabuco Road back to O'Neill and then follow our usual route back to Cook's. The 50 milers will continue as usual out to Caspers, and when they return back to the Dove Canyon waterfall, they will also follow the new route along Plano Trabuco Road. We'll post an updated GPS route map on Geoladders soon

New route just approved and finalized due to Arroyo being virtually unpassable. Geoladders route to be uploaded soon. Stay tuned!

Glad to hear about the reroute. A friend and I rode the Arroyo Trabuco/Tijeras Creek loop last Saturday, and the Arroyo WAS a mess. Kind of fun, like an "Indiana Jones" adventure, but there'd be riders all over the place down there.

But what about the Bell View trail to Caspers? Has it been cleaned up? I seem to remember trail condition photos showing major rutting and blown out sections..

What - no dreaded at the end of the ride? There is a short kicker hill past coyote brush on line shack in whiting that will hurt at the end of those miles. As long as there are fellow sufferers should be all good!

Feb 13: Caspers Bell Canyon Trail still a distaster. beyond the Starr Rise Trail juction towards OSO at the next creek crossing, the creek looked six feet deeper and three times wider with solid river rock HAB sections. Starr Rise Trail (which) connects to the Bellview / West Ridge, HAB through creek and a few hundred yards of sandpit. Unless some major regrading or trail rerouting has been done, plan for some extra time 50 milers.

Incindentally, Bell Canyon Trail section to Starr Rise Junction, Sunrise Trail, Cougar Pass, and East Ridge Trails were in fair shape as of Feb 13.

You could try riding trails that are similar to the course.. lots of relatively short, steep ups and downs.. while increasing your endurance to the approximate length of time you expect to be out there.

B* and the 25 are very different - gradual stroll vs. mileage and steep burst. Rwanda will be much more of a burner. Loop Whiting, Luge, and Whiting once again...that should give you an idea of the ups and downs.

Also remember there will be other 'suffers' out there to encourage and push you on...
