I was going to do a huge ball-buster ride this year for my birthday but this sounds a little more reasonable. I'm hoping I'll get an invite to ride with the SS Slacker group this year.

From my GEOLADDERS record of the ride - stats taken from my Garmin. I had not ridden much leading up to the ride and hit the wall climbing back out of Caspers. I walked quite a bit on the East Ridge back there. Picked it up a notch once I got back out to the Dove Canyon waterfall.

I've done the 25 Blindman. Ah, not an easy ride for beginners. Some technical sections, some very steep climbs. 25 miles is a long way on trail, 50 is epic.

I suggest you go out and do some of the ride to see yourself. The start from Cook's corner is brutal. If you don't mind parking at O'Neill start from there and do Arroyo Trabuco and La Tijeras. I haven't been out since the rain/floods but it's always been one of my favorite rides. That section is very doable from O'Neill. You just have that tough start from Cook's...

Since you live near Chino Hills I suggest this... go out and do Northridge to Sycamore to 4 Corners, down Raptor and back up South Ridge to Telegraph. That's 18 miles with comparable climbing (OK maybe alittle harder). If you can do that you can do the Rwanda ride.

    Reroute update

    http://50mr.com/rwanda-ride-re-route/

For those who wanted a little variety in our Rwanda Ride route, we have good news for you!

The Arroyo Trabuco Trail (the one that follows the creek/wash back into O’Neill Park) is still a mess after the heavy rains. Our trail crews have assessed the situation and have given that section of trail “two thumbs down”. No way it will be rideable anytime soon. So, we get to try a new route this year!

We’ll still have a 25 miler and a 50 miler. The actual mileage may be slightly over, or slightly under – we haven’t decided yet. But one thing is for certain – it will be FUN! Our team is working with the various park rangers in our area, and they are cooperating with us to make our event as successful as ever. Most of our routes will remain the same as prior years. We’re just coming up with alternatives to get us back into O’Neill without having a lot of road riding.

Stay tuned! Please follow us on FACEBOOK to keep up with the latest trail news. If you’d like to help us with trail work to get our trails in shape before our event, please sign up at VOLUNTEER. You don’t need any experience, we provide the tools and the training. Thanks for your support!

Denmother honestly I love the Caspers section - is there anyway to have both rides go out that way but then have the 25 milers loop back from Caspers back to O'Neill? That would be awesome!!!

Some of those trails no longer exist. Conditions and pics were posted here:
1st set of pics from trail assessment

and here: 2nd set of pics of trail assessment

Most of which was part of the 25 mile course and part of the 2nd half of the 50 miler
    .

No way to do it as the split off at Dove Canyon sends the 50 milers that way as an out and back.

So to add that Casper's section for both groups would make the 25 miler much too long.

Looks like they are adding a part of Whiting into the ride for both the 25 and 50 mile routes:

"All of our local riders know about the rain damage to Arroyo Trabuco Trail, which is expected to be closed for several more weeks. Bummer because that was the only way back to O’Neill and the finish of our event. We would also lose about 9-10 miles of our ride. But I love it when a challenge becomes an opportunity for something even better. In our effort to find additional trail miles, we contacted Whiting Ranch. Turns out they are thrilled about adding their popular park into our event route. How cool is that? We’ll still start and finish at Cooks Corner. But now all our riders (both 50 and 25 milers) will head to Whiting for some fun new trails. We’ll get our needed mileage in, and a bit more climbing too just for fun, before we return back to the Aliso Creek bike tunnel and on to our “normal” climb into O’Neill Park. We hosted a training ride today through our new 25 mile route, and everyone thought this year’s route is our best ever!"
