There are a bunch of outs for this ride as it traverses through Rancho Santa Margarita. There is one big hill at the start that will be a little tough but the majority of the trail is pretty flat. It is a good amount of miles but as with all STR rides nobody will be left behind (gene always makes sure of this). If you feel you need to cut it a bit short, there are many that can point you towards the street where you can ride back to Oneil quicker.

Count me out. It will take 1:30 just to get there. I don't feel like waking up at 4:30AM.

    Maybe next time.

90% sure the wife & I will still go. I haven't slept well for the last few nights, so I'm not crazy about the earlier start, but I understand the logic for beating (some of) the heat.

Dagomako - I will also have a shock pump in my Camelback. I drive a green Subaru and I'm on a silver Turner Burner.

Elvia - Mrs Waldo has only ridden a few times, so we'll probably be doing a bit of walking too, and will also consider a shortened loop depending on how she feels. Lets try to make contact before the ride: If we all agree to cut it short, maybe we can ride out together. See note above for my specs; the wife is on a blue/green Kona Kula.

Thanks CC for the PM warning about the time change

1x1 - when you pass out from dehydration alongside the trail, don't worry: I'll take care of your XCL for you!

damn, just remember i had some nasty ghost shifting on my last ride (2 weeks ago) and decided to check bike for tomorrow. found a link on chain the keeps binding. anyone have an extra chain or can help me bust out link tomorrow before we start rolling. think i'm running sram something with power link.

other option is to bring other bike = Stinky. but have never been on this trail and was hoping to not have to ride the 40+lbs of love in the mad heat. am i gonna be hating life if i bring the Stank on this trail? alot of climbing??? thoughts??

Spray it good with lube and work it back and forth and see if the link loosens up.... if not you could cut that link out and add a power link for one ride then replace it...

    Or steal the Stinkys chain!!

Jesse, you WUSS! I went on last weeks ride with only 1 and a half hours of sleep, did the extra credit with a recovering knee injury and I'm twice your age. You outta be ashamed of yourself, what is it with youngsters today?

We'll miss you out there today, get your beauty sleep, you need it!

Thanks to all for a fun ride.....have to do it again sometime!

Sorry I was off STR for a while. I was riding in San Diego w/ my brother. I am glad that Traci called me to let me know that the start time had changed. Also, thanks to Gene for changing the header on the ride

Just curious which of the two routes was used for this ride. I was wavering between coming and not but the hour's change in start time totally killed it. I am SOOOOOO NOT a morning person. I usually wake up at the crack of noon. Plus I'm not a socal native but from wonderfully, frosty, cool, comfortable Western Canada where it was 60 something (sigh... :()

Anyhoo, like I said, which route was used, how long did the slowest and fastest riders take (I've never been on an open ride before so I'm just wondering how I would fare), and how many stayed for beers and dogs afterwards?

I will be doing this ride when the weather turns sensible and I will be going after noon. I'll post a headsup on a separate thread when I go and if there's another couple of mediocre riders or two that want to make it a team effort, you're more than welcome. Congrats to the people that woke up and rode in time and didn't wither in the heat...you all are my heroes.

    Tak'er easy!

We went out of the park and headed up the twisty single track that comes out on top of the park on the trail. Then we headed onto Antonio Pkwy, left on Santa Margaretta Pkwy, right on Plano Trabuco and up to Tijeras Creeck trail just past the Coto De Caza enterance. Ride along Tijeras Creek trail To Oso and cross, right on Antonio and drop in on The Waterworks trail, ride by the bmx area and hit the single tracks, then out on Arroyo Trabuco through the jungle section and back to the park. This link is a variation of several ways you can go. PM any of us and we can show you or help lead your ride when your ready.
