Hubs are rated to work with a 22/36 combo, which creates more torque than a 30/42t combo in the 1x10.

I've got ~250 miles on the 42T since January. Pulled the cassette to clean last week...so far...there are no gouges on the hub body. I run a 30T in the front.

It would depend on how many are running short cage RD. There is a reason the XX1 is not a short cage but what does SRAM know;) There is difference between max cog size which is 36 and got around with longer screw and capacity. If you are over the capacity you can over extend the RD, it can only handle so much of a gear difference, what happens is compensating more than it was designed to handle (especially with a FS bike) It will have the same effect as when you have a chain thats too short.

Of you can follow others advice and hope it works.

Majority of the people using the 42T are running either a med or long cage RD. If you have a HT...the short cage should be ok. On a full suspension...I would not take the chance.

If you have a short cage...put the chain in the 42T and compress the rear suspension all the way. Check the tension of the rear derailleur cage...if that thing is stretched to the max with the correct chain length...I would not ride it.

Here is an MTBR thread on short cage RD's with the 42T.
