I don't know the definition of "essential services" as it's listed here, but here is an un-politicized answer to your question:

"Due to the lapse in federal government funding, the U.S. Forest Service, as with other federal agencies, is closed with the exception of certain essential services. However, we will attempt to make timely updates about public health and safety on these web pages as appropriate. We sincerely regret this inconvenience. For general information on Forest Service shutdown procedures, please visit USDA’s website."

EDIT: click on the link above....it's hilarious

Wait it til the rains come and soften up that already soft dirt.

The Jeep will end up just like the Blazer on Buckthorn just below Santiago Peak.

Yeah throwing rock is rather childish and first century/stone age...............just give it some time people would go 21st century on it and fill it with bullet holes!

And most mountain bikers don't carry guns.

Since when do websites shut down due to unavailability of people to watch them?
I guess the Gov't isn't paying Go Daddy annually ;)

They don't it is just another way to inconvenience the public. I am trying to find out if the gates into the forest will be locked because I am heading to Flagstaff tomorrow. I guess I head out and hope for the best.

Even if they get it out, it might not go very far. I rode by it this weekend and saw that the suspension was in VERY bad shape. One of the springs was sitting in front of the Jeep.

A shame the jeep was lost, but they shouldn't have been there in the first place.
You'd think that before they drove up an unknown dirt road they would have some notion of it's suitability to the intended use.

What about the gas, oil etc. Fire and toxic hazard. I'd think.

But who am I to judge , I damn near got stuck on a cliff in Kings canyon by hiking off trail.....

Multiple groups poach/use trails in CNF. The other groups are able to get their gear out when they fall off the trail most of the time.

Just got back. It's a bummer to see. Doesn't look like it'll be going anywhere any time soon. It's in a tough spot. Fuel tank is laying on the ground behind it.

That might be more for safety reasons than for vandalism reasons.

Suck for who ever lost that jeep and guess it'll be reported stolen. So whoever has a jeep has a new pick your own part now.

You're talking about a very small percentage of the MTB community actually digging illegal trails. And from an environmental impact perspective, (fuel, noise pollution, tire tread weight/damage, etc.) it's not even in the same ballpark to carve a thin singletrack around a few bushes for a bike as it is to poach a trail in a 2 ton rig.

I'd be up for a few engineer-auto-hobbyist MTB'ers disassembling it, piece by piece, and rebuilding it on a display ramp at the Luge flag!

    Johnny come lately

I don't own a 4WD. I don't go 4 by-ing. But let me ask you, why do you think it's called Santiago TRUCK TRAIL? Because it was a truck trail long before MTBs existed and long before us Johnny-Come-Lately MTBers started acting like we had exclusive rights to it. I've been up there plenty of times when a 4x has been up there. Doesn't bother me in the slightest. You enjoy your form of recreation and I'll enjoy mine.

When all the trails are outlawed, the only people left riding them are the outlaws. I'm left to poach this trail about once a week on my moto for this same reason.
