here is a another route suggested by another member through pm

"Suggest start at the Beverly entrance. If you want to do all three loops Rattlesnack, Cowtrail, A-Line(7th), out A-line thats is 15.1 miles with 2,800 feet of climbing."

Starting off at Beverly would be the best option for everyone.

Ha ha ha! It's my step daughters birthday so I can't make it if we host a party unless she wants to hang out with her friends, then I get to hang out and ride with cooler friends :bang:

I can do either if I can make it.

Unless by newbie you mean new to the group or trail, but not new to riding and climbing, then yes it is newbie friendly as there is a good variety of trails you can do in a short distance.

If, by newbie you mean new to riding period, Turnbull may not be a good place to start them off unless you never want them to ride again. I may get a lot a slack for saying this, but I speak from experience. Unless the newbie is in good shape to begin with and enjoys physical challenges, this is not for them. Many people who think otherwise forget what it is like to be new and out of shape. This is a very discouraging ride even if you take many breaks. It will either involve long (>1 mile) steady climbs or short steep (>15% grade) climbs.

Coming from the Beverly trail entrance, it's a ~2.5 mile fireroad climb to the water tower with an gain of about 600' most of it in the 1.5 miles. That will be the easiest of all the climbs. If you do the most popular loops (fireroad on Beverly -> 7th St. -> Rattlesnake -> CowTrail -> A-Side) then you will have climbed close to 3000' in about 11 miles or so. If it's hot, bring LOTS of water as there is very little in terms of tree cover. Only place will be 7th St loop which is probably the shortest, but steepest and most difficult of the climbs overall.

start throwing out the hangin out with friends suggestions. if she's a teenager she would probably prefer it... unless you're filthy rich and it's her 16th (stupid mtv show)

Pato - newbs i talk about are the new to riding and i kinda figured that this wouldn't be the place for them. i'm still gonna need the many breaks though because i'm way out of shape :). if you don't believe me ask dakit :)

seriously though. if this is going to be a social ride, it needs to be at a social pace.

    Beverly > water tower > down 7th > up 7th > down A-Line to Beverly?

That's what I'm thinking Dakit. If people are wore out when they get to the tank then they can take the fireroad or A line back down.

I've started a lot of newbs into mountain biking over the last 15 years, and I'll agree with Pato. Turnbull is not a good place to start off new riders. Nor is it a good trail for a social ride. Don't get me wrong - I really enjoy riding there (except for the poison oak, damn it!).

Went on this ride last night with the weight loss crew, seems to be ok for us ham n eggers and sand baggers.Clipped my ankle on my pedal and ended up with 29 stitches. It seems easier to make the water tank than the golf ball at Black*7th had plenty of short steep sections and switchbacks. Not much shade to be found on this track it could get hot as the time goes by.smoky

I've haven't rode Turnbull myself, even though it's close by. I've always wanted to ride from Powder Canyon to Turnbull, might give it a try this weekend. If anyone's interested let me know.

Cow trail and the single track that ends up at Whittier college are pretty good options too.
