New Salsa FS 29er - Big Mama

I wonder what bike shop will get one of these for me to test ride....

 

i've been waiting for someone to come up with a frame mounted rear post mount so you don't have to run that stupid adapter

i'm liking it :bang:

 

the replaceable dropouts are key too...

 

Did the dropouts you saw use a Maxle?

Agree that rear brake mount is sweet and you can run an adapter if you want to run a bigger rotor

 

The one thing I really dislike about the frame......the rear brake mount.

If you have IS brakes.....you're out of luck unless you want to run an adaptor and a larger rotor. And....the adaptor you'd need to run is a big cludgy thing.

But...the main reason I dislike it: There does not yet exist a tool to face post mounts. What does that mean to you? Unless those posts are absolutely, dead on straight and true....your rear brakes will never function *perfectly*. Avid's CPS system will help.....but it'll likely still pose a problem.

Otherwise....sweet frame.

Change is good Brian. I remember the backlash when they stopped putting post mounts for rim brakes on forks and frames

 

Nope.....Avid has a patent on the CPS washers. Hope/Hayes/Shimano/Etc all really on the frame/adaptor to be completely square and true and have no mechanism in place to adjust for a mount that is out of spec.

Change is great.....I'm a big fan of it. But....change is lame when it limits your options, doesn't work as well as the original and doesn't solve anything

Why not use the Avid washers on any brake caliper. Is there anything special on the Avid caliper?

 

I'm honestly not real sure......but I wish they hadn't. IS is more versatile and doesn't limit the brakes that one can use on a given fork/frame.

Not only does the post mount system limit your ability to face the caliper mount.....it also limits your ability to space the caliper side to side with the use of shims between the adaptor/caliper and the fork/frame. This is something that happens all the time due to variance in hub disc spacing.

Call it nitpicky.......but I'll stick with IS.

The Avid caliper is spaced specifically for those washers......if you use them on any other calipers the rotor will not meet up with the pads properly.

Otherwise you'd be on to something!

Funny the only time I had a tough alignment issue is when I was putting together a friends bike with a Fox Fork and Avid Juicy 7 brakes.

that's about 1/2 an inch longer than my seven has including the maverick linkage!!! yowza!

about the only issue i've found with longer stays is getting the front wheel off the ground- it has actually helped me on both climbing and descending to have longer stays.

good lookin salsa. their bikes just keep getting better and better- I'd love to have a 29" juan solo.

Brian, do you mean that the washer stack for Avids would put a non-Avid caliper too high for proper contact?

There's gotta be a work around for this. Maybe a shorter stack of washers? Just thinking out loud...
