It all depends on what type of riding you are looking to do and your tolerance level. As a beginner, I would suggest getting a used bike from this forum, craigslist, or ebay.

450 bucks can get you a entry level bike but you'll be unlikely to get a full suspension bike for that price but there's always a deal to be had. I agree with buying used as your best chance of getting more bang for your buck. Personally I'd stay away from the Mongoose stuff. Look for brands like Giant, Specialized, Trek or GT but there are plenty of others that are very good bikes.

Welcome from a fellow newbie. Like the others have said, for $450 to 650, better to look for a used bike if you want a full suspension. Up until a month ago, I was looking for a bike as well and ended up with a 2007 Jamis Dakar XLT I bought over at jenson's for $750. I don't know what size bike you ride or how tall you are as they only seem to have xs left, but if you're in the 5'5'' range like me, you might want to check it out. There are alot of deals out there. Good luck.

My suggestion to you is just to lurk around the marketplace and pick up a bike from here. always great deals going around and you will defiantly get alot more bang for your buck buying used. This especially applies to fullys. Low end fully's are usually crap... this generally holds true until you start spending 1000+. another idea is to check out bikesdirect.com they have cheap prices with decent bikes.

    good luck have fun!

How tall are you? I may sell you my 2007 Specialized Stump Jumper Comp. It has just been overhauled, very clean. I would want 800 for it though.
