Last Sunday my wife crashed riding her road bike and broke her nose and got all scraped up. She is feeling a little better now. I rushed her to the hospital and they took xrays and said it was broke. I'm taking her to see a specialist on Friday. The swelling went down a lot last night and I can see her nose is slightly crooked.

    1) Has anyone been through this type of injury?
    2) She would like to know how long till the black eyes go away?
    3) When will the small amount of bleeding stop when sneezing and other movements?
    4) Will she most likely have to get a nose job to straighten it back out?
    5) Will insurance cover this?
    6) Any tips on makeup to cover the black eyes?
    7) Can you buy just the hood body for shimano shifters?

We have Kaiser insurance for those wondering.

I'm trying to get a little more educated before Friday. Thanks for any help and opinions that you may have.

Well my nose has been broken 3-4 times. Took a good 3 weeks for the black eye. As far as make up tips, im not any help. My nose is bent two directions......but I never went to a doctor. It will heal crooked if not taken care of.

I had my nose break before. Never had it taken care of so it is a bit crooked. It affects my breathing (through my nose). I still get little bits of bleeding all the time. Not like running out of my nose, but I will have bloody snot periodically.

If you go to the doc, I believe they will straighten it out (no nose job needed). I was jut a stupid stubborn kid back then. I now basically need to get a nose job some day to get rid of this stuffy nose feeling that I always have.

Note: my nephew has been diagnosed with Von Willebrand's disease, so I might have a very mild case of it, hence the bloody snot I seem to have a lot.

    Edit: on #7, yes....

My wife has gone done a couple of times. The first time she broke her wrist which required a trip to the ER and Kaiser covered everything. You should have no worries.

I only had a mild black eye (fell at the #$!% Loop and my glasses hit just under my eyebrow; internal bleeding pooled in the eye socket), so my feedback may only be a limited help. When I tried to cover the bruising, it was easier to cover the darker. When it got green/yellow (healing), it was harder to conceal. My advice on makeup is this: for dark circles (not exactly a black eye, to say the least), use a YELLOW concealer (it will counter reds/pinks and also the dark). Make sure to use only a little bit (NOT too much), and when applying, pat it gently (won't work so well by rubbing or pulling). This is quite effective for natural dark circles, but I haven't tried it on a full-on black eye. Hope she is feeling better soon! Here's my girlie .02

Depending on how she heals from normal bruising, the black eyes will fade in the same manner. It's hard to tell how crooked it is until all the swelling goes away; as long as it doesn't resemble Owen Wilson no one except her will probably notice.
As long as she can breath without difficulty there is not much they will do.

Please convey my condolences to your wife. It sucks, especially for the girls. It's much more acceptable for us boys to be banged up. And now when you two go out, people will be looking at you like you're a wife beater. Be strong, brother.

Yes. I looked like something from The Walking Dead. For weeks, children feared me. Grownups looked away.

Depends on how bad. Maybe one or two weeks. Maybe they'll get worse before they get better. Sorry.

    Soon.

Yup. I'm no plastic surgeon, but in my case the doc insisted on waiting at least a year, so all the broken bits would be healed up and in their permanent positions. Feel free to ask me about surgery when that time comes.

Since it's the result of an accident? There's a good chance.

Ask me in a PM or email if you want perspective on this.

    Kaiser insurance won't cover that.

Oh, yeah. One more thing... jala neti is your friend, but now more than ever.

I have not broken my nose, but I did break my face(LOL) mountainbiking in 2009 & the plastic surgeon I went to was awesome. His name is Dr Allen Doezie & he is in Ladera Ranch. If you need a second opinion or don't feel comfortable with the first specialist I recommend him. My insurance covered mine. They send you an accident questionaire that you have to complete for their records, but it will be covered.

Thanks everyone for your information. I relayed it to her which made it better since she feels a little more educated about what she is going through.

As for the bike, the front pieces are the name plates (type A and B). Looking like $50+ to get those replaced. I found Far and Near makes some anodized gold one piece version. Does anyone know of a Far and Near dealer in So Cal?

Having broken my nose 7 times, I know what she's going through. The first time is the worst, IMO.
I believe that the insurance will pay for a septoplasty (to fix a deviated septum) if she has trouble breathing. However, a septoplasty won't necessarily straighten the nose completely or return it to its pre-accident look. Also, surgeons get paid to do surgery, so they will recommend it even if its not necessary. My nose is pretty crooked, but not as bad as originally because I had it fixed via septoplasty. If she wants any cosmetic changes, she likely would have to do a rhinoplasty. Cosmetic rhino's aren't usually covered, but maybe your wife's will be since it was caused by an accident.

KP is great. They've always been good with our mishaps, not just standard medical stuff. I'd ask your attending physician about any reconstruction, etc. As I've said, they've gone above and beyond with our care. Hope her recovery is fast.
