For a Crankset, the SLX Double 170mm would be my choice. The Shimano rep told me that crank(SLX Double) is supposed to be 40% stronger than XT due to the steel thread pedal inserts and the design of the crank arms. They also come stock with a 22-36.

The SLX double specific front der. is designed to shift from 22-36 better and it's shorter for more clearance. I'm running this setup with an E13 DRS and it's been perfect, especially with the direct mount front der. on my Enduro.

I am running a 36 ring on my SS and thinking of running a 34. 36 tooth ring hits a little too frequently. I might even run a 32 and take off the granny.

I have not hit my 36 bashguard that much a few time but I would hit my 32 bashguard on my old bike. Where are you riding that you hit it that often. Most the time when i hit the bashguard is when I take a drop slower then I should.

Are you hitting your pedals all the time too then? I dont see how you could be hitting the ring but not the pedals is your climbing.

I have run my SS as an all mtn bike with the Boxxer. Its awesome. But as a DH bike get used to the front end washing a bit. Tight, rocky switchbacks become interesting. At slow speeds it will do anything and save your butt on any endo landing. At high speed, the rear end wiggle will not inspire confidence in ruts, loose rocks and washboards. You really have to load back to get the rear wheel tracking where you want it to go. On smooth stuff, she's a complete dream.

For the spring, I'm 170, and with all dh gear & a camelback, I'm fine on a 400lb spring. It all depends how harsh you ride. For example, I'm using Mavic Crossmax SX wheels and they have yet to dent or go outta round since I purchased tham. And I go with about 105 lbs of air in the fork. Only once had a super harsh bottom out. The short seat stays will end up taking weight off the front end.

I use the Cane Creek xx Zerostack headset and the flat Boxxer crown. My front end is actually lower than a friend with a Totem. Bars noticeably so. I also use a setback seatpost to move my weight back and make the cockpit bigger for me.

I have a front derailleur and use the E13 DRS. I didn't mess with grinding up the guide to make it fit. The front lower pivot bolt has a set screw AND a lockring located behind the chainwheels. I don't think you need both so I used the lockring groove as a guide to cut down the end of the pivot bolt. Everything works fine for me. Only do this at your own risk and if you are fully mechanically inclined.

Good luck and you will find she wants to REALLY go up off even the littlest thing!

Oh. I had XT cranks and they are so incredibly flexy compared to the Saints. INCREDIBLY. And you're using XTRs... My bike is 35lbs as shown and that's ok by me for all mountain. And the Saint cranks rule. XT cranks with Syncros aluminum Bash to be sold soon.

A 400 with a few turns would be be right for a firmer ride at 170lbs.

170 lbs for 28% sag is 417 spring.

200 lbs for 28% sag is 492 spring

    HUH??? :?::?:

I've never experience such washing and rear end wiggle. Perhaps it's a bike setup issue.

The XTRs are plenty stiff, and they hold up just fine for all but super extreme stuff, which I'm sure David won't be doing. The XTRs are made of a different aluminum than the XTs. The new Saints are made of the same stuff as the XTRs.

Are the XTRs 175's? That might be too long.

What are 175s too long for? hmm...I wish I would have known last year before installing 175 XTRs on my SS. And to think I had a set of 170s I could have used. ;)(But I never needed them, so they are now on my fiance's SS.)

The first gen Saints are very good - no problems, other than being a little on the heavy side for most people.

What have you heard about them that isn't so good? :?:
