I've had my fair share of knives I've carried. SOG, Kershaw, CRKT, Spyderco, Benchmade among others I can't remember anymore. One thing is for sure. If you use them, they will get chipped, dull, or lost. It used to pain me when I would lose few hundred dollar knives.

I recently found out about Byrd knives a year ago. Turns out, Spyderco is making a lineup of knives in China. The price point is very attractive, and I can tell you this. The quality and action is remarkable for a $20 knife. The blade metal is definitely a cheaper quality but this is my beater knife I cut things on concrete and metal. I just sharpen it back up and don't care because it is $20.

I'm curious OTHERRIDER how you carry your dive knife Benchmade. You got me thinking. Got any pics of you carrying it?

I was just about to post this same knife! It is by far my favorite backpacking/outdoor knife. Super light, super sharp and super cheap! While splitting wood I slammed my last one down on a rock (with quite a bit of force, scotch, car camping and log spliting...bad combo) and chiped the tip off. I was all bummed for about 10 seconds then realized, its 10 bucks, ill just buy another! first one was like 4-5 years old and well used!

I am not a big knife guy so I need some safety.

So I like a knife that locks both open and closed AND that can be activated with just one hand.

Not as fancy as others...Buck Redpoint

What would be just as cool as paracord is a rubber dip. You can buy it at lowes or HD. Its a liquid rubber for dipping handles of tools. Dip it in, let it dry, and you now have a thin, tacky rubber handle. Sweet knife.

I don't have any good pictures of me wearing it as the sheath sorta blends in. I'm not trying for concealment, but most folks don't notice it right away.

I have a buddy who is a parachute rigger and he used his big boy sewing machine to attach a "Slot Lash Tab" on one of my shoulder straps. The lash tab is one of those multi-purpose mounts that you see on a lot of outdoor gear. The sheath has a thin stainless steel carry tap that locks into the lash tab.

The knife is very easy to release and remove but I need to be real careful putting it back in. With the Camelback on, the sheath is positioned just above my armpit and rides flush to the strap. Neither the sheath or knife have ever fallen off. On the bottom picture you can see the thumb release tab just to the left of where the knife enters the sheath.

The Tri-Hone and Sharpmaker are both excellent options for their money.

If you're serious about knife sharpening, there are few knifes you can't get WICKED sharp with a Tri-Hone and a strop (or extra fine stone).
With that said, the Sharpmaker makes knives plenty sharp and it's super easy to use.

Yep, riding with it for almost three years now. My wife only noticed about a month ago. Of course, she thinks I'm crazy. Who does she thinks keeps ALL of the kitchen cutlery nice and sharp?

That pic gets me all randy. The S&W knife I carry fits in the tube slot on the shoulder strap. So no rigging to get it to stay. Plus, I just didn't trust a button lock to keep the knife in the sheath.

    That is a sweet benchmade.

I have the gatco system like this one lsited... Only I bought two extra stones for it, a 600 ceramic, and a 1200 hundred ceramic..... Kinda scary using a stone meant for surgical equipment.....Litterally mirror finish on the edge.

I dont use this kit too often though, usuallt when I need to repair a balde, just take too long for general sharpening.

For normal sharpening that I can shave with, I use one of these delux sets here, four rods, two course, two fine... the fine is a 600 ceramic....

    http://lanskysharpeners.com/LCS5D.php

Litterally takes less than five minutes to sharpen your blade. and is substantially cheaper than the spyderco system

Problem with taht is, you lose the usability of the paracord. Paracord handles are nto the most comfy, but the real idea is somewere to keep your paracord for survival use........
