As an outdoorsman, I always carry a knife. Not so much for defense, I'd rather run away first, but more so for its use as a basic outdoor tool. You can cut things with it for fabrication of items such as a splint, bandage, crutch, stretcher, tournequet, water collector, fire starter, it can release you from entanglement, fabricate fasteners and ties, dig, pry, and if needed procure and prepare food.

This is my personal favorite carrying knife. Ive released a couple of seagulls entangled in rope and fishing line on the beach with it, fixed a collapsed trunk lid bike carrier on the side of the freeway, amongst a few dozen other situations where a tool was needed. Most importantly, it opens beer bottles with a hard anodized titanium gray carabiner/bottle opener. Whats not to like :) Its the Leatherman Skeletool CX.

    Thanks for sharing!

That's a really useful tool there. Looks like they've lightened it up a bit from past years so I might think about procuring one for myself...:-k

I agree with you, that it is extremely important that those of us whom spend some amount of time in the out of doors, carry a good knife. It is a very versitile tool that can get your unlucky butt out of many an adverse situation and is one of the "ten essentials" for traveling in the backcountry.

I recently purchased a Gerber Epic and I love it. It's got a sturdy, half-serrated blade that is capable of really taking some abuse, but it is relatively small and lightweight. The sheath and handle are fiberglass-impregnated nylon, and there is a built in bottle opener on the pommel end for enjoying some well-deserved libations at the end of the day. The clip can be swithed around on the sheath for you lefties out there. A great purchase at $33 on amazon.

Sebaney, I agree with you completely. 5 ounces is very respectable for a tool that large. It's been lightened up from years past.

Also, you open carry that Gerber right? (12020 PC)

I usually carry a mini griptillian or an osborne 940 if I can find it. both are small light and sharp and hold a good edge. I figure it's always a good idea to carry some form of knife when riding. Now if I could only find that folding katana harold was using in star trek...

I usually wear a Columbia River (CRKT) M16-14 Tanto. They are reasonabley priced on amazon and I like the lockout feature as it feels like a fixed blade. They are around 5.25" inches closed and are 9.25" Open which makes for a really useful large cutting tool and would definitely do some damage if need be. It carries amazing at a little over 5 ounces.

Yeah, I usually carry it clipped to my chest strap of whatever pack I'm using. The blade "locks" into the sheath so it can be clipped upside down as well.

My everyday carry is a kershaw blur tanto. I think it would be cool to carry around my ontario M9 though....Maybe strap it to my camelback lol

You guys should check out a Victorinox Trekker. If memory serves right, the Wenger is a full straight blade.
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000VY4OJS
I got this for my sister last Christmas, now I want one. The lock is stiff, no play in the blade at all. And came from the factory super sharp. Plus I can also see the saw being very useful. Only downside is there is no belt clip.

I carry 2 Victorinox knifes on me, so yeah great knifes. But ya'll already knew that =P
Price was only $30 during the holidays for that set though....

When I'm outdoors on a ride I carry this, a CRKT Crusiers. A beast of a EDC knife:
For other outdoor activities, like camping and hiking, I carry this Gerber survival knife:

For everything else I just carry a small 3in folding blade knife.

I just went through getting a knife for riding. Fixed blade, carry on the outside of my pack. I was carrying my EDC(Kersaw Leek D2 Composite blade) inside of my Hydo pack and that was really dumb

Inverted shoulder strap mount. Great simple blade. Carbon steel(great edge) and I will wrap it with paracord.
