Going down Yerba Buena is on the MC route. It has you going down it and then left on Cotharin. Cotharin becomes Pacific View which becomes Deer Creek. Deer Creek is a very steep downhill to the coast.

Cotharin was a bit of a surprise when I did MC last year. I thought we were descending all the way to PCH in my mind. Then to see Cotharin was mentally tough. That was one heck of climb. I actually really enjoyed it and am looking forward to it. It just has that "wow I'm on a big climb" feeling.

Man we need to get some of you climbing hounds up to the Death Ride! That is one hell of ride for sure. Comparatively huge climbs - 5 to be exact. Can't wait for that ride this year.

I agree with Liz Matt. Better stick to the dirt. :)

No really - Do it! All the kids are into road biking these days.

Sean, Have no fear if you want to do the Death Ride you can get tickets. There is a forum just for the ride. Start looking a month or two out right up to the event. There will be tickets available. We got two tickets just days before the event last year. If you want to do go for it. Bergsteiger and I are already registered.

Did we ever. Here's the ride report.

Well, we did our Mulholland ride on Sunday which turned out to be a beautiful, dry and coldish day.

8 people started, 3 people (and maybe 4) finished.

2 dropped out after the Rock Store climb for reasons they would not say but I think it may have been a case of True-Roadies-Unable-To-Assume-the-MTB-Mindset syndrome.

Stacy ate it cresting over Yerba Buena necessitating 1 helicopter, 3 fire trucks and 2 ambulances coupled with a Ventura and Los Angeles civil servant turf war. L.A. got to drive Maurice (Maurice6943) and his bike back to the top of the Rock Store climb. Ventura got Stacy. A fireman who swears he lives close to Stacy (wink, wink) took her bike. Stacy will live many more years but I'll let her tell you about the multiple broken bones and broken helmet. She did manage to protect her Queen-of-the-Mountain jersey from scissor happy paramedics, nurses and doctors however.

Johanna, after staying with Stacy, left to do her own ride. She still hadn't returned when we got to our cars at 4:00 p.m.(Today she reported in that finished but she had 3 flats while completing her route.)

Then there was me, DZ and Rick. Since we had made it to the bottom of Yerba Buena when we got the news from some other bikers about the accident, we continued on our merry way. After all, we would have had to go uphill to see what was going on and...well, let's get real. We experienced a few seconds of guilt when we saw the helicopter but we got over it. I can't tell you how far we went or how much climbing we did because all of us had defective technological devices. We didn't do all of the miles but I'm pretty sure we did more than the planned climbing on account of the fact that we consented to DZ's short cut routes which DZ assured us had minimal climbing (like maybe 2000' more?) We did the first loop only with Encinal added in on the route home.

Yerba Buena is bad but Deer Creek is something else entirely. There's no such thing as stopping on that road. I hope I am the only one on it when I get there.

    I had a blast.

So, I guess Dirtmistress' route is next.

Wow that sounds epic. Sorry to hear about all the misfortunes. I hope everyone is able to heal and get back in shape before MC. It's not that far away.

Yuck!! Too bad about Stacy! what all did she break?
    Was she hospitalized over night?
Yerba Buena down and Deer Creek down are worse than any climb on MC. Broken pavement, gravel and fatigue are just an accident waiting to happen!

On my route, the way I set you up, you will do every road on my route in that direction but not necessarily in that order.

Wow, sorry to hear about Stacy. I swore I wouldn't do the MC again until they paved Yuerba - it is a terrible road.

Well, since Stacy isn't stepping up to the plate, I will tell you. She broke her collar bone and her scapula when her bike slipped out from under her turning on gravel. Or at least that's what we think happened because no one saw her go down and she doesn't remember. The helicopter showed up just to find where they were located and, more likely, just because it was a beautiful day for a helicopter ride. Stacy rode the ambulance to the the hospital where they made her spend the night because one of the doctors reading the films thought she saw an air bubble in Stacy's lung.

If I got anything wrong, Stacy can correct me.

The best part for me was that there was no traffic whatsoever going to O.C. from Thousand Oaks when I left the hospital at 6:30 p.m. I don't know if it was the Academy Awards or that traffic just lightens up in the evening.

I'm planning on doing Dirtmistress' route on March 20th leaving from the Ralph's parking lot at 8:45 a.m. If anyone wants to join us, please do.

Dirtmistress' ride is the one that she gave me, somewhere above, when I asked for a M.C. training route.
