I just got off the phone with the Rangers office and according to them, the only place open for biking is Chantry Flats. All others are closed indefinitely.
I rode up there via the toll rd on Saturday. I saw hikers going down the singletrack...I would have taken it but did not have time.
It's a shame that one of L.A.'s best "legal" DH runs is out for the count along with a good part of then Angeles Crest. That fire was devastating sadness
With Angeles Crest closed, pretty much everything available via the Crest is out. Chantry, GMR and pretty much everything else East is open.
I climbed Mt Wilson tr a couple of weeks ago and it was open. If it was closed there were no signs saying so. Didn't see any other bikers but a lot of hikers. I dropped into Chantry via Upper Winter Creek on the way down. The area at the top was closed to vehicles so not sure if you could get to the top of either Sturtevant tr or Mt Wilson tr. if you are shuttling.
Regardless of the fire, the Mueller Tunnel is still closed because of the slides from last year. So when the forest does open up again, Mt. Lowe road will remain closed. Mt. Wilson trail is open, but the upper half is in pretty bad shape. Crews have been working on some of the trails in the closed areas of the forest under FS supervision. In case you missed it, I've been attending FS volunteer meetings on behalf of CORBA: http://corbamtb.com/news/2010/03/17/angeles-national-forest-update/
So in other words, Mt Wilson trails are illegal to ride. Uh oh...you know what that means? We can't talk about Mt Wilson on STR and this thread may soon deleted. According to rule 8 in the STR posting guidelines, "Any posts or threads about riding known illegal trails will be deleted." CalEpic will be deleting this thread very soon. Just giving you crap Craig!
Closed, not illegal. I know you're just goofing but I wanted to make the distinction. As Steve and Scott have said, not everything is closed. The Chantry area and The Wilson Trail are wide open and welcomes anyone. Not shuttle friendly (due to Hwy 2 being closed) but if you can peddle or HAB it, you'll be rewarded. Mt. Wilson Trail is 6-7 miles of DH bliss!
Referring to the areas that are "closed": I've always been under the impression that if an area is closed to riding, it isn't legal to ride. If it's not illegal to ride, then it's legal to ride, right? If that's the case, then who cares if it's closed?
Legal when open. Big difference (vs. illegal trails or cuts). Closed at this moment but not for long. And I care, we care & you care! Stop being complimicated and go with the program, Lee.
Open mid to late April? Is the Forest service planning on rescending their "Forest closure order" which states the closure will expire September 30, 2010? http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/angeles/orders/StationFireRecoveryOrder-01-09-08.pdf maybe they will just revise "Exhibits A & B"? I hope you're right, April's here and I'm sure we're all ready to get back up there...too bad the FS can't figure out how to keep the public informed...
