I just heard a mountain was either shot or captured this afternoon on borrego. Any one else hear this? I saw the heli hovering over whiting and the sirens about 330.
I rode up Borrego literally around 3:30pm and didn't see anything. Fair amount of folks up at 4 Corners and no one was talking about a mountain lion.
Haven't heard anything besides the one captured and relocated from a few miles east in Northern Mission Viejo from a few days ago....
KABC7 News mentioned that a mountain was shot in Whiting Ranch this morning on the 5am news, but I can't find anything on their website.
There were a couple hiking families leaving the Whiting entrance when we were heading in around 3:00. Everyone knew about the siting and there was a helicopter periodically coming over to see ??? Oddly this was one time we did not see any deer through the park - What was more frightening was the dude who totaled his truck on the Canyon road and could have taken out a bike or two!
I also read that the lion was stalking a young child. That is why they shot not tranquilized him. Public safety comes first but sad.:?:
i still dont get why all the deer and mountain lion sightings in whiting but rarely in the santa anas. Whiting is completely tied in by houses and roads on both sides - how does that work? I guess the easy explanation is more people in whiting to the lions?
I ride Whiting regularly, and I must say I see more deer there than any other place I ride in OC. It's like seeing seagulls at the beach. Think of Whiting as the Hometown Buffet for mountain lions.
Are you referring to Whiting? Can you post a link to where you read this? Lots of dense cover and year-round water probably have something to do with it. And the large number of human visitors in Whiting make it way more likely that these animals will be sighted, as compared to the relatively few visitors in the Santa Anas & CNF.
I have a theory there's a lot of deer in whiting because hunting is illegal there, but not in the rest of the santa ana's. There always seems to be a big spike in the number of deer during hunting season.
So the deer read message boards or tweet each other and collectively decide it's time to move into Whiting for the season, eh? Interesting theory :-k
I was there yesterday afternoon. Nobody mentioned a lion, but there was a ranger on bike riding Serrano.
Busy day for the lions I guess - I was riding in O'Neill climbing the Live Oak fireroad around 1130am just before the lookout bench and an MTB couple coming the other way stopped me and said they just saw a lion cross the trail right in front of them. This would have been just on the other side of the rise after the bench where the trail runs downhill slightly, before the trail forks. They were wide-eyed and gave a perfect description so I know they didn't see a bobcat or coyote. They reported it to the ranger station and I spoke with a ranger on an MTB later on in my ride who confirmed it. They were freaked out but I told them they were really lucky and how jealous I was that I didn't get to see it. Interesting indeed that 2 lions were spotted on a super busy Sunday morning in the local parks...I don't know about Whiting but O'Neill was absolutely teeming with riders, hikers, walkers, and "equestrians". Lots of little kids on the trails too.
http://abclocal.go.com/kabc/story?section=news/local/orange_county&id=9486745 I hate how she describes the mountain lion. "Beady little eyes".
agreed! I was pretty irritated with her comments, description of the mountain lion, and the way she described the whole experience.
Ha - I understand if the cat was stalking a backyard or school, but to take children into an area with posted signs and not expect the warnings to be true?? Same holds true for shark hunting when people are in the ocean.
