We're all familiar with mountain lion sightings at Whiting, but what about the other side of Santiago Canyon? Are they just as common...or uncommon depending on how you look at it?

I'd say more common than we would like to think. Tracks in O'neil last week as well... I was solo riding last week, Stop to pick up trash, look down OH MY big kitty tracks, time to move on.... (at a little faster pace than i normally do)

I'm pretty sure lions only range over about 1/4 mile or so, so I doubt they'd be all the way over at STT.
    ;)

Sarcasm aside: I see delicious-looking deer on almost every ride in Whiting, but have never seen one on STT/Luge. There's also water in Whiting. I'm not saying they don't go for a stroll along STT on a regular basis, but I have to believe that the living is easy around Whiting...except for all those pesky people.

    It's wilderness. They're out there.

We saw a dead one at the bottom of Luge last Wednesday. He was propped up against the access gate with the antlers between the verticals.

Hope it was a vehicle not something else. No blood or flies at the site so who knows... maybe exsanguination by some witches that were chased out from Blair Witch by a group of Tuesday Mtn bikers ??

I had a young buck launch off the STT on the turn after the step-over last week. And there are indications of deer all over that area. Its when the deer are gone that I start to worry..

Me no mtn lions yet on the STT and luge. But a lot of Deer! Nothing like riding at night, turning a corner and seeing 6-7 sets of eyes in the hills looking back at you.

Speaking of Luge, man, somebody put something dead in a black trash bag a week or two ago on modjeska grade. That thing smelled bad!

Now that you mention it kioti, I do remember seeing deer tracks on STT several times. I guess there's just something about seeing them live and up close like I often do at Whiting that sticks in my memory more. I almost hit one when it jumped in front of me on the Live Oak singletrack there.

i was near the oaks dam, irvine park side, and i saw a big ass cat. i pointed out the cat for my friend and my friend was like HOLY SH!T theres deer right there too. the cat was laying low following the deer closely behind.

i've been looking at survival knifes as i'll be riding mostly solo while being a TAV. do any of you carry pepper spray or a knife?

that is all well and good but a big cat won't attack you from the front....so unless you are quick on the gun(so to speak) a knife or pepper spray may not do good...then again like the Boy Scouts say...Always be prepared....

Try this, light, seems like it might help if you are in the right situation to use it.

all you have to do is be faster than the slowest guy...

on a serious note in the army up in ft. lewis washington i used bear pepper spray on a very large bear that got way to close to our camp site... all it did was piss him off and luckily i was holding more than just pepper spray... trust me with big animals there isnt a whole lot you can do to protect yourself other than use your gear or bike as a shield, your best bet is to stand still and dont make sudden movements... unless you have a good gun and quick steady aim.( thank god for sniper school )

oh and as for the knife thing.. you would need to have a 5 inch blade minimum to even have a chance..
