Do you mean the one trail called car wreck or the entire trail system at Aliso woods?
If you start from TOTW just head down and veer right onto Mathis Car Wreck will be the only single track on your right a few hundred yards after you pass the bench/kiosk at the top of Mathis.

If you want a map for the entire park I'd suggest parking at the dirt lot/ ranger station in Aliso and picking one up-not sure if they have them at any other kiosks in the park.

Geoladders would have satellite views of the place with possible photos to direct you in the right direction. If not, its hard to miss if your looking for it. From top of the world, take the fireroad to the right, ride it downhill until you hit a kiosk/bench (you can spot this kiosk from ToW). From there, the fireroad splits. Head down the trail on yor right (labeled Mathis). Follow this trail, it heads downhill then uphill. After the uphill, immediately keep an eye out on the rightside for a trailhead marker labeled car wreck. Enjoy!

Thanks, how many miles is the ride? Is it good for beginners? I am looking for 2-3 hrs ride trail with not too many steep hills.

Car Wreck is as Steep as it gets at Aliso. Def. not for beginners. But you do have some beginner friendly options; Cholla, Coyote run, the main fire road, etc.

Car Wreck is definitely not a beginner trail. In addition, I believe Mathis is still closed, which is the only access to Car Wreck. You can check the status of Mathis at www.ocparks.com

IMO Aliso Woods is not too newbie friendly. Try Carbon Canyon or Puddingstone.

This is a bit off-topic, but I'd heard mention of 5 oaks quite a bit here so I veered off my normal path and went to climb it. lol. I pushed up the stairs and rocks a ways and finally turned around. Checked geoladders when I got home and saw every ride using it is a circuit through the park and streets above, DOWN ONLY. Oops.

Also, it's damn hard. I had to dismount for the stairs. Is it just as hard above where I stopped?

FYI: Actually, Mathis is Open. The connector trail that leads to the bottom of Mathis from the main canyon is closed until July. The county is putting in a new dirt road that will connect the main trail with Mathis so they will have access to the top of the ridge for emergency and fire vehicles. FEMA has funded this project. You can still access Mathis by way of the Dripping Cave Trail which by-passes the present connector single track.

Also: the reason they do not have trail maps right now is that they are having them reprinted to show the new road.

Actually you have it backwards. Hike-a-biking up the trail to the top is currently the only legal way to get there. The "back route" through the park and streets is illegal.

The stairs on the bottom of that trail have gotten progressively sketchier over the past few months, since the big rains did some damage to the bridge at the bottom. Theres only one (optional) part of that trail thats really sketchier, and its at the very top (3-4ft drop to a very steep landing and quick off camber turn).

OP, Car Wreck definitely isn't a beginner trail. It's second only to Stairsteps as one of Aliso's most technical legal trails. It's gotten a lot easier since it opened but still, totally not beginner friendly.

CraystalBug is a new 'Dirty Girl' and you boys should be ashamed of yourselves for not being more helpful...

We need to schedule more newbie / group rides to bring the new ones out. As soon as BB playoffs are over, I'll put my money where my mouth is and post a few.

Disco would have been much more entertaining or provoking post ;)

Is that why they have the port a potty and all of those concrete gravel piles lined up? I was wondering the other day when I went for a loop in the park. They have also leveled a ton of the grassy meadow areas along the bottom canyon trail. Is this part of the work they are doing or are the two unrelated? I was kind of bummed to see most of the meadows plowed down to nothing to be honest.

This trail is not for you.

Go to peters canyon or irvine park
