Just rode it today. Tried climbing up out of the main lodge even though it was "closed". Still a lot of snow drifts in the shade of the northern aspects. Had to turn back 1/2 way. wasn't looking foward to getting off my bike every 2 minutes on the way down. And the drifts just kept getting bigger. The face still has a good amount as well. Although some of it is clear. I would imagine the backside is looking better, as it usually melts much quicker.
I am headed up to Mammoth this weekend from AZ with the GF.... excited to do some rides on the mountain, especially now that the top and middle of the mountain will be open. I checked out motionbased for some GPX files; only DH stuff. Also glanced over the map and looked for some XC routes. Any suggestions on a half day 30-40 miler, the more climbing the better
Chad, if you get started early enough in the AM, before the lifts start, ride up the mountain to get some climbing in. If the snow lets ya, climb Uptown, Beach Cruizer, Off the Top. Then pick any trail back over to Paper Route to Lake Trails, cross the pavement and ride Panorama and Mammoth Rocks Trail back to town. That may get you close to 30 miles all singletrack. Hope the snow is mostly gone for ya. Dean
Thanks for the route! We are riding Rock Creek tomorrow morning as a warm-up and then on to Mammoth for some biking and hiking. Looks like great weather in the forecast. Hope everyone enjoys a ride this weekend...
Tried Beachcruiser 2 days ago. Only made it 1/2 way. Still a lot of snow. They still have their work cut out for them on that side of the mountain. I hope it will look better next week. We did Uptown to paper route to lower skid marks to lincoln express to break through and back to downtown today. Very little snow on that side of the mountain. You could probably link lower skid mark all the way over bridge the gap if it's climbing you want. We love to climb as well and thought about finishing the climb over the gap. Ran out of time! Had a great day anyhow!
I called Mammoth today, and they confirmed that tomorrow trails such as flow and velocity will be open! Linky here http://www.mammothmountain.com/MountainActivities/SummerActivities/BikePark/ Sounded like the person I spoke too was was just reading off the website, but they also told me and I quote "our trails crews have done an amazing job" so go up and check!
Well, rode velocity, shock treatment, and flow today. Had a handful of problems with my fork which seem to be fixed now although there is bit of a fork oil stain in the mammoth parking lot. Flow had no flow, had puddles, rivers, and 10 foot snow banks blocking it. To get to flow you had to go up the fire road and drop in instead of the normal way into flow, because that was blocked by a raging river with a few inches of snow covering it, which we foolhardedly crossed, once! Velocity has no jump at the bottom, but otherwise seems fine. They've cleaned up (wimpified) shock treatment a bit. Lower shock treatment is closed. There was some rumor of somebody poaching chainsmoke as well. I would wait until all of bullet is open before coming back. Edit: bullet was open today top to bottom. It was a good day!

Finally managed to wake up early enough to do the Dean's route that he suggested. Thanks again for the route. Uptown, Beach Cruizer, Off the Top. Skidmark to Paper Route to Lake Trails, cross the pavement and ride Panorama and Mammoth Rocks Trail back to town I made it up to the gondola a little after 9pm, so no traffic of DHers coming down.My GPS died mid-route, so I am not sure on mileage or climbing. I did not see anyone after I descended from the top, just a few hikers on Mammoth Rocks. Post-ride headed to the Stove Country Restaurant to meet the family. A few pictures (in no particular order) from the route.
good to see stuff open. can you get down to bullet/flow from the summit? or do you have to pedal from McCoy? maybe thinking of doing a trip in 2 weeks :-k
Chad glad you enjoyed the loop...very nice pics..thanks. Not many really think about climbing Mammoth...nice job. Dean
