So I've been researching on here for the last 30 mins or so about tires for Mammoth.

I am currently running an '06 Enduro with a Talas 36 RC2 fork and a DHX 4.0 air rear shock. I have a Kenda Bluegroove 2.10 in the rear, and a Maxxis High Roller 2.35 in the front. I really like both the Bluegroove and the Maxxis.

The general consensus seems to be 2.35+ for the rear, and 2.5+ for the front. I am debating leaving the 2.10 on the rear, but I feel like that's going to be too small for Mammoth.

    Thoughts? Suggestions?

I am going there for the first time and I plan to run a 2.5 Blue Groove front and 2.3 Nevegal rear.

I think I would run something a little bigger in the back. With it being so loose, that tire will necessitate you using more front. Not good in the kitty litter. I can show you the top of my helmet if you'd like to see what too much front on that stuff can do.

Have a great ride. It's fun up there.

I run a Michelin DH32 2.8" up front and Michelin DH24 2.5 in the rear.
Go as big, knobby and tacky as you possibly can. The kitty litter gets deep in the corners and high-speed washouts suck.

If I were you, at the very least, I would lose the 2.10 blue groove and run the 2.35 High Roller in the rear, then get a Kenda Nevegal 2.5" stick-E compound or Kenda Excavator 2.5" stick-E compound for the front.

Thanks everyone. Yeah, that seems like it'd make the most sense, and I've been reading lots of good things about that Nevegal.

I'll second StinkyRider's suggestion and go with the widest tires you can fit in your frame/fork. I'd run the Michelin DH32 2.8" in the front and a Michelin DH24 2.5" in the rear.

I'd pass on the Nevegals myself though. While they are a great tire, I don't think they'd do well in kittylitter. They are more of a roots/rocks type of tire and they do very well there. Especially the Stick-E version. If you want to go with Kenda, may I suggest the Kinetics. My only issue with the Kendas is that the sidewall is pretty thin and is prone to pinch flats/cuts.

I'll second the michelin DH32 rec as well. it's a good, wide tire, but I did pinch flat it on follow me at 25psi

I ran a tubeless minion DHR at 35psi and it held up great for a back tire this season so far.

last weekend I ran a 2.5 Kenda Nevegal Stick-E, and it worked fabulously. a lot better hookup in the pumice than I expected. might even be grippier than the michelin (blasphemy, I know) I'm sure the 2.7 Nevegal would be a great tire for up there as well.

also had very good luck with nokian Gazzoladdi Jr.s (2.6"). ran those last year with tubes F/R and they held up great all weekend at 25psi.

Just find something big, wide, knobby, and you'll be good. mammoth responds well to a lot of different tread patterns etc. I would definitely get a beefier set of tires if you plan on hitting anything past the flat XC trails though. that highroller won't grip for beans in the pumice, probably the blue groove as well. those are hardpack tires, and if you can find some hardpack in mammoth, I'd like to see it.

    Specialized Chunder!!!

You can't go wrong with any of the tires listed above!
I decided to try a new tire this year (2.7" Intense)... Quite pleased!

With that said, a 2.5" CHUNDER is golden!

(Note: Chunder's run a bit wider than Maxxis tires)

Ran a Nevegal 2.5 Stick E up front and a 2.35 Panaracer Rampage out back on the Heckler last year and it worked well.

Considering that you are running a 2.1 rear tire now, I can only assume that you are riding more of a trail/AM/XC bike.......so getting anything bigger than a 2.35 to fit out back might be a challenge.

well, all I know is that when I rode the 2.5 highroller on Mark's M6 at webb, I was blowing berms because the tire drifted. I could only see it getting worse in mammoth, at least as a front tire. back tire you could get away with though. it's actually a stunning back tire for riding in socal (got one on my trail bike)

Thanks guys! I think I'm at least going to put my 2.35 High Roller in the rear and get a 2.5 for the front. Will anything larger than a 2.5 fit on a Talas 36RC2 I wonder? Hmmm....

    Sick Nomad btw...
