Mammoth Closing Weekend 9/20-21

I thought I was the only one who placed friends into DH and non-DH categories.

 

ok, so it sounds like everybody that wants to ride rock creek friday wants to ride it in the afternoon...that's fine with me. I'll pm my number to all the people that wanted to do this ride, and give steppie a call late morning to see what kinda timeframe he's looking at too. If anybody else wants to hook up with us, either shoot me a pm tonight or get a hold of someone else that's gonna ride it friday.

I'm packing right now and outta here tomorrow morning at about 5...see y'all up there!

I will not be getting to Rock Creek until maybe 3-4pm Friday so don't wait for me. Plan on riding the pavement up and doing the upper two sections.

Dean, i'm going to call Tim when we get up to Mammoth. If it works out, maybe we'll drive down together, and we can do a shuttle run with you guys. I'll call you Friday afternoon.

I agree. It could be 40 and I wouldn't care, but I don't wanna be getting blown off drops and things all day.

Currently clear and sunny.

56.8 degrees at the Main lodge.
44.8 degrees at the summit.

Winds 5.5 mph bearing east-northeast.

Today's low was 37.3 degrees at the summit.

Looks like perfect weather for full body armor and full face helmets.

I'm leaving for mammoth in about 7 hours and so far this has been the longest day at work in my entire life.

long pants, body armor, and a tee-shirt should be good then. bring a windbreaker for the top.

p.s. any opinions on which of my front tires I should go with? I've got a Blue groove 2.5 DH or a gazzaloddi jr. 2.6 4 ply. They're about the same size. the gazza is a bit heavier and knobbier, but I'm used to the blue groove, and it seemed to work in the kitty litter in big bear (not sure what the litter in mammoth is like though) whaddya mammoth vets say?

 

From my limited experience with the blue groove, I don't think it grips well in loose conditions at all.

Put the Gazz up front. The kitty litter gets way deeper in Mammoth. I'd run the Gazz front and back if you have a pair of them just to even out the weight so you aren't so nose-heavy. They'll be way heavier but there is minimal pedaling in mammoth. Even much less so than big bear.

Worse comes to worse, bring a couple spare tires with you. You can swap them out until you find a combo that you think works best by field testing.

 

Might be able to join you for that, if GVT has some lungs and legs for the climb. Where do you folks park the vehicles?

No, they don't give and they don't breathe!!! But, if that's all you have, then go for it.
