Rhodesian Ridgeback got away from my friend this morning up in Noble Canyon. He's 2 years old, about 95 pounds, has a star on his neck and isn't fixed. He didn't have a collar on and isn't micro chipped. He's very friendly, was raised by my friend, his young son and their other small dog.

Here's a picture I have from last year:

My friend is still up there looking for him. Please call/email/text either of us if you have any information:

    Thanks.

Ohh man... Bummer. I feel the pain of your friend. I also have a RR and he goes for off-leash rides/runs with my wife and I. Sounds like he may have gotten a scent of something and went after it.

Good luck to you and your friends.

Check your local animal shelters everyday and do not give up looking for him. Hopefully somebody turns him in.

Unfortunately that area has mountain lions. That sucks man. I'd be a wreck if I lost my dog and I'd be still looking for him right now. Good luck and keep us all posted on what happens. There are a lot of dog lovers on this board.

I am starting to be a firm believer on remote collars. The new ones have a vibrate feature where you can train them to recall when it vibrates, like a cell phone. They have a 1/2 mile range too. Some people think its inhumane, but those are usually people who don't understand how the remote collar works. Most of the time, the stimulation can't even be felt by us. It serves to get the dog's attention back to you so that there are no situations like this. I figure if the dog doesn't recall with the vibrate function, a slight shock to get him back is way more humane than to have him get hit by a car and lie dying on the side of Sunrise hwy.

Post signs EVERYWHERE!! Hit all the shelters in the area. Alpine, San Diego and all towns in that area like Julian and whatever else is around! Whereever there is a shelter.
Then contact RR specific rescue and try to contact all the rescues to inform them!
Ads in the paper and checking with locals too!
This is sad. A dog lost up there is heartbreaking.
Hope he finds a water source and if he doesn't end up dead, hopefully he will end up home or with someone that will tag him, neuter him and microchip him.
To let your dog off leash in a forest without tags on is just plain stupid and irresponsible!

My heart goes out to you and his family! It just hurts.
I won't go into details about having animals leashed. That is for another time. I'm sorry and I hope he is found soon!

A dog without a leash is like a rider without a helmet.

Rhodesians are lion hunting dogs... he'll be just fine up there on his own. He can probably take down a deer if he has too.

It's too bad he took off, hope he returns to the owners soon.

A Ridgeback will do well in the wilderness. Coyotes would pose no problem, but a Mountain Lion 1 on 1 with a Ridgeback would be a major problem. Yes Ridgebacks are Lion hunters in south Africa but it takes 5 Ridgebacks to corner a Lion. Cold temperatures and dehydration would also be concerns.

I'm not familiar with Noble, but I definitely would go back today or tomorrow to continue the search. Good Luck.

Sturdy dog, there normally is water in the creek Noble follows, popular area for bikers, hikers, equestrians and it is deer hunting season. Point is there are many people out there and Noble is not that remote. Hope whoever finds him makes the effort to find the owner.

When we used to lose dogs in the woods hunting we would leave some blankets, water/food and most important some clothing, that had the owners scent, where we parked the truck. More times than not the dog would be curled up in the blanket/clothing waiting for us the next AM. I know that works with hounds, australian cattle dogs, and american staffordshire terriers.

RR's are definitely hardy and very intelligent dogs and don't have much to worry about in the woods except for Mt. Lions. Good ideas on the blanket/water/clothes. And, RR's are hounds so these ideas may work just as well as they have in the past.

EXACTLY. They were bred to take down lion's and bears if I recall my research on the breed correctly. They do this by latching on the nose of the lion/bear. I have a Rhodesian/Lab mix and he is scary when he's p*ssed off. Utility and delivery people won't get near the door or our yard when he's in attack mode. Seriously, I think he'll be fine. Just get pictures posted - LOTS OF THEM - out there soon. Let us know how it goes.
