Well today was the day we drove out to Beverly Hills for Julia's knee surgery. Her knee has been repaired and now she is looking at 4 - 6 weeks of physical therapy. Her Orthopedic Surgeon said her surgery went very well and doesn't forsee her having any problems. I've heard some of the people Julia rides with say, one of the reasons they enjoy riding with her is because she does what they tell her. She was no different at the surgery center she fully cooperated with doctors and staff. Julia did major reserach on her condition and surgery being able to ask many questions and put out her concerns to the doctor. It was nice to see her keep a calm demanor. After the surgery she was asking for pizza and wanted to sit up immediately. Thou the first time they asked her if she wanted to see me; she said no. The way home took almost two hours and the pain was kicking in but she handled it well. Kudos to her for being such a good trooper. Today again she proved to be a very strong girl. I did not have her same demanor! Thanks Trojaninsomanic? (Mark) for the help. -Elvia
PT's going to be a breeze for her. Like what I told you before, her doctor will likely recommend biking for her as part of her rehab, as in exercise bike.......not the Socom:lol:
Very glad to hear that everything went as planned, good luck on the recovery Julia and hope to ride with you after you have been fully recuperated
Ricky told me about this yesterday. Tell her to hang in there- I'm sure she will be ripping again in no time!! BTW, I'm pretty sure that between all of us we can put together a sweet stack of DVD's for her to watch while she is still laying low... :-k
Glad to hear everything went well. We'll have to get out on the river trail for some rehab when shes ready.
I had knee surgery in 2000. I have always been active and honestly, those of us who live active (sounds like Julia does) fair very well post surgery. My only advice is to not jump in too soon, allow the healing time, take on gradual strength training rides (cycling is best by the way) and stop any time you feel pain. In no time she will be teraing up the trails and feeling great. It has been 10 years and I have had no issues and can participate in any activity as if nothing ever happened:bang: I wish the same to Julia:beer:
Elvia, after my knee surgery, in addition to pt & eventually pedaling (first stationary bike then road bike) I also incorporated yoga to help regain range of motion. I took it very, very slowly only going as far as my body would allow so as not to do any damage. I'm sure Mark can chime in to the benefits of flexibility training. Heal up quickly, Julia!!!
Best wishes to Julia for a rapid recovery. I know she has an awesome attitude and will sail through the process in no time.
good to hear everythings good with the kid. Hope she gets healed up quick, there's a season of sweet riding on the horizon :bang:
Good advice to heal up right, and not rush it too much. You're very young, with lots of time to ride after everythings all healed up! Take care of that knee!
Was that before or after he broke his chain? Saw you guys after your ride crossing the street Hey....I have women of dirt on DVD.....lets meet up and you can borrow that from me
Thank You! You are all awesome and Julia is very grateful for all the well wishes. Most grateful for the DVD thoughts. The kid is giving us all a great example (here at home). One of the best patients she hasn't complained or whined once. Has not required a pain pill as of yet. She said her leg only hurts when she first gets up. Of course she has a drip that she squeezes to numb the pain. Her goal is to get to the races tomorrow to see mtnbikerfred race. We will see how things go but so far she is proving she can handle it (I think). Julia plans on following her doctors advice 100% she thinks his advice makes alot of sense. Her reasoning for this is to be on the DH bike asap.
Glad everything went well. I have had 2 meniscus surgeries and have learned to listen to the Doctor and the Physical Therapist. If you explain your lifestyle and your goals they will work with you and make sure you understand the recovery process. You cannot cheat with your body (i.e. trying to get back to riding too soon) as it will only catch up with you. Better to be recovered and strong!!!!
