Same thing happened to me. I came home form a very hard ride and I made it through the ride okay, but the freekin cramps kicked in. Swigged a few gulps and they went away almost instantly.

I don't think it's the salt, because I've tried that before with much less success. I now take a flask of PJ with a flask or two of Hammergel on all rides over 4 hours.

    Yeahhhh...

The same thing happened to me on my infamous Stair Steps run ... I started cramping from the effort... went directly to the fridge ... found the pickly juice (which came highly recommended on this board) chugged a couple of ounces and then a couple of more and then figured, what the hell and finished off the bottle. The leg camps went right away... and the stomack cramps went away too ...after hugging the toilet bowl for a while.... took my wife an hour to stop laughing!

Bleeeeeech! I'll take the sore, cramped muscles

I HATE pickles...the idea of rubbing the ghastly things in mustard is just plain gross and disgusting! I don't think I'll be able to sleep tonight - thanks

    Pickels are very tasty!

When summer time comes back around, you need to try my old favorite......

And as for drinking the juice for taking care of cramps, it's worked for me. I don't know excactly why, I just know it works for me.

My brother and I once replaced half our dad's mug of beer with pickle juice, thinking it would be pretty funny.

If I remember correctly, he didn't cramp up at all when he beat our a$$es.

You need to go to the Katella Deli and try a half-done fresh Kosher dill pickle. Sooooo good!

Waging War against Cramps - Dropping the gauntlet...

I've found a new weapon to use in my ongoing struggle against cramps.

Let me introduce you to Jason Witten's drink of choice - Pickle Juice Sport!

Check out the sodium content. There are two servings per bottle.

A 12-pack arrived at my door yesterday. This weapon of cramp busting fury will be making it's debut at the 12 Hours of Temecula #2. Chilled, shaken or neat?

I've seen that before, and thought about ordering some. But we go through enough pickles here in our house that I just pour it straight from the jar.
Bye the way, where did you order it from?

    I ordered them from here:
    http://www.medco-athletics.com/Supply/Product.asp?Leaf_Id=260508

Shipping kinda kills it though ($9) and they charge tax too.

    well.

They are both weak acids (acetic and lactic) pKa of acetic is 4.76 pKa of Lactic is 3.86. If anything the more stronger acid would protonate the weaker acid, which would make the weaker acid less soluble in an aqueous solution. (lower pKa=stronger acid) So I don't think it has anything to do with it's acidic properties.

Dubjay I thought you said that stuff is just a myth. Maybe we can have MythBusters to test it.

    ditto.

Also I wonder about placebo effects. Subjective statements of "I felt better" don't really pass muster in scientific peer-review.

If something makes you feel fresher and less tired, then it has done the job that you wanted it to do, but that's not the same thing as proving it actually does X as a physiological or metabolic phenomenon.

Not only that, but let's not forget the stomach's environment is fairly acidic, and that whatever goes into the stomach gets broken down.

In other words, just because you drink pickle juice (= vinegar and therefore = acetic acid) it doesn't mean that the thing you drink remains in that same state as it gets metabolized by your body. It surely doesn't remain "pickle juice" in some magical compartment that travels directly to your aching muscles.

The surest way to stop cramps is to drink enough water and maintain a decent balance of sodium and potassium.
