Anyone have a good online guide to changing shifter cables? I just bought a new set for my bike and realised I've never actually done this before.

I have XT shifters. I saw a guy change a cable on my bike before, but the housings were already cut and ferruled, so I've never started from the very beginning.

ya Im gonna go with What Nam said, when I look at the stops it doesnt seem to be showing any signs of being modified..the paint is still "wrapped" around the "tunnel"(lack of a better word) exit. Anyhow I went to my LBS and picked up 9 feet of housing!!!, hope to have everything on again to ask more questions....the guy at the LBS said to dial my limits in and clamp, then start shifting like no other to stretch out the cables...and then try to tune it? that sound right to you bubbs?

    What I do is:

1.) If the derailleur is a rapid rise (low-normal) adjust the low limit screw without the cable installed. If it is not rapid rise (high-normal or SRAM) adjust the high limit screw.

2.) Turn all the barrel adjusters all the way in. Should be two of them on Shimano stuff. One at the shifter and the other at the derailleur unless it's an XTR which does not have a barrel adjuster.

3.) Install the cable then shift to the opposite end of the cog.

4.) Give the bare cable (between the two cable stops at the seat stay) a few good pulls as hard as I can with my bare hands.

5.) Fine tune the shifting using the barrel adjusters.

This method will prestretch the cables so you won't have problems with cable stretch further down the line. Not a big issue with me, but for the more technically inclined it will keep them from coming back complaining about a bad job or poor performance.

Don't even bother with trying to handstretch cables. It will be good and stretched after one ride and all you have to do is like a half turn on your barrel adjuster on your shifter and you will be done. With the SRAM stuff, it is so easy, I loosen the barrel adjuster at the shifter near the end of my first ride while I'm still on the bike. After that, you never have to touch it.

Also, I disagree with how you adjust the limit screws. Push the der all the way towards the spokes, eyeball it while you adjust the limit screw so that it lines up perfectly with the big ring. Then let it go back to the small ring and eyeball that while you adjust the limit screw for that direction so that it lines up.

Regarding the housing, go with full housing especially since the stops look like they are ready for it, at least in the triangle area. When you cut the end, make sure you use good cable cutters that cut in a circle, and not just plain electrical wire cutters. Then, you want to inspect the inner jacket and use a punch to kinda bore it out, to make sure it isn't pinched. Then spray some silicone lube spray into the housing. Then feed your cable through. Done.
