Eric, you will truly love the Pacific Coast route and I recommend the book "Cycling the Pacific Coast" it's kind the bible for touring here.

    http://www.amazon.com/Bicycling-Pac...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1259807750&sr=1-1

Summer months are better but services are available year round. What I truly enjoyed was meeting all the people along the way . Most were on bikes but some were on motorcycles or walking and all had great stories. I met people from all over the world but most were from Europe. I'm not sure all the state parks are open year round but these places can't be beat for prices and hot showers. Hiker/Biker sites throughout WA,OR and North CA are cheap nothing over 5 dollars which keeps private parks cheap for bikes too. KOA offered some pretty good deals with clubhouses (TV and microwave and soda machines, pool table/ping pong table and laundry facilities it was very cozy. These cost 10 dollars a night and was really worth it.

Hey Eric--Too bad I didn't know about your ride earlier. My mom and step-dad live just outside of Fort Walton Beach, FL. My step-dad is retired air force and a really good guy (I constantly have to forgive him for being a conservative). I'm sure they would have helped you out somehow. I'll be following all your posts now. Good luck.

I seem to have run out of journal posts...

Wow Eric: I remember seeing things you'd posted here about your journey, but somehow I'd missed the link to the journal you've been posting. In the past couple days I've read through it all, and taken as a whole like that the impact is that much greater. And even with all the details you've provided there are still so many questions that come to mind with each day's reading. I wonder about how your body and bike have held up (btw: which saddle do you use?), about your favorite and least favorite places, about vehicle encounters, and about what you would do differently and what choices have been spot-on. I hope you do turn this into a book, and when you do I want to buy a signed copy!

When you do get back, I'd be proud to join the ranks of those who have bought you a meal. And I'm not always the best about sharing waves, but if I see you in the water you'll definitely get the set of the day!

Again, congrats on the journey so far, and best wishes for a great ride home.

Sounds like that that Trans Rockys solo race from Bamf, Canada to New Mexico.

If you can do that ride above you should be competitive at this one.

Body has been fine - The key seems to be just eating everything that comes within reach and drinking lots of water.

Bike has done well - A few broken spokes, a couple of flats but overall no problems.

Saddle - Specialized (forgot the model) I picked up in Phoenix.

Favorite Place - Arizona/New Mexico on Old Route 66.

Least Favorite - Florida and I'm riding as fast as I can to get out of it.

Worst states for vehicle encounters - Florida/Texas/Oklahoma

What I'd do different - Start a little earlier and not hit an early winter.

Spot on - Heading south out of Kansas. If I had kept going east, I would have hit the worst of 3 winter storms.

I'm heading west now by a slightly different route. I'll see how far I make it before winter completely shuts me down.

This ride has been the training run for this.

    Just a little update.

    Made the news yesterday.

    http://www.wctv.tv/home/headlines/79001667.html

    Barring any changes...

I will be hiding out down in Florida for the winter then heading north when it gets warm enough.

Plan is to ride north up through the East to New York then west to St. Louis and the start of the Louis & Clark Trail, follow that to Oregon then catch the Pacific Coast Route back to SoCal.

EF that! Takin' back the cuss word!

Said everytime you need, or you need to motivate someone, to do something extraordinary and sacrificial. Very glad I saw this.

    That's awesome Eric!
