I knew traffic accidents suck...now I'm living it!

Most of me is OK, but I have a broken foot which will take 6-8 weeks to heal.

No Counting Coup '08 for me...aaargh. I had been looking forward to it and training for it. Hopefully, the Warriors Society will give me a refund and let someone in who's been on the waiting list.

I was actually returning home after a ride. I drove to Pasadena from Whittier, rode the Lower Sam Merrill to Echo Mountain, then the Echo Mountain Trail to the Cape of Good Hope (where the singletrack meets the top of the super-steep paved road) and back down again. The accident happened on the drive home about two blocks away from home.

It could have been worse, and I know there are more serious injuries than a broken foot, but this isn't gonna be fun.

I will see you on the trail as soon as I can.

That's terrible news! I had to drop out of the CC because of my shoulder. Sherry at Switchback was awesome at refunding my money and was really quick about it too. Heal up quick and glad to hear it was only your foot. Take Care!

Big time bummer - I'm sorry to hear of your pain.

Not to scare you, but depending on what broke, you will want to follow the Dr.'s orders VERY carefully.

I busted four bones in my foot in my only (and last) motocross accident. Being young and full of mustard, I jumped the gun on the weight-bearing restrictions and one of the bones healed badly. Now, anytime I walk on a hard floor, pool deck etc., it feels like I have a big stinking marble stuck under my skin. NO FUN AT ALL!

Granted this was before micro-surgery and pins became common place. Take care and heal up!

Hey thanks everyone for the kind words and the support. I'm glad this section of STR exists.

Sorry, Coleko, it was indeed the Xterra with the custom pinstriping. I've really been enjoying it. We'll see what happens from here.

    As for what happened...

I was making a left-hand turn. There was a turn pocket, but no signal provisions for a protected left hand turn. I was in the intersection with one other vehicle behind me waiting to make the same turn. Traffic was heavy and I had to wait for the light to turn yellow for the opposing traffic to stop before completing the turn. The light changed to yellow, and two vehicles approached the limit line in the opposite direction. The vehicle in the inside lane slowed to a stop, and the vehicle in the outside lane went through the intersection. I waited for the vehicle in the outside lane to pass through, checked to make sure the traffic was clear and began turning. I was then hit by a driver in the outside lane who chose to charge the yellow light. The driver behind me in the turn pocket has offered to be a witness, gave a statement to the police, and gave me her contact information.

I've spent the day napping, making phone calls, and retrieving personal stuff from the vehicle at the tow yard.

When the accident happened, I had my bike in the back, along with riding gear and two big bags full of tools. The cop was rushing the tow truck driver to get going, but I was NOT gonna let anyone drive off out of my sight in possession of my bike. I had to pile all of my stuff on the curb and wait for my wife to come over and help me load it into her car. She had room for everything but the bike.

I then walked my bike home (I got a flat at the end of the ride and walked the bike back to the vehicle rather than fix it on the trail) unknowingly on a broken foot. A couple of hours later my foot was KILLING me and I knew a trip to the ER was in order. The ER staff took great care of me.

I'm pretty gun-shy about driving right now. I feel much safer traversing a rocky, two-foot wide trail that snakes its way along a 60-degree mountainside.:-k
