    Update: Hurkey Fractures my Fibula

    Well,
What started off with a great day of climbing up to Ernie Maxwell, down Maxwell, and climbing all the way back to South Ridge, turned into a one-legged ride thru the Meadow and waiting along the 74 for DirtVert to pick me up.

A few hundreds yards from finishing South Ridge, I took a right bank, front tire washed out. My left leg didn't unclip fast enough and my bike and body landed on my lower leg. After getting up and realizing my ankle was wrecked, additional pain was coming from my upper calf muscle. After a few gel tylenol tabs from Dean (DStepper), I managed to make it to the fire road. Thanks for the quick drugs Dean. Doug and I headed back since I could no longer put any pressure on my leg and the rest of the group went on. After doing a one-legged pedal down the fireroad and thru the Meadows, we found an area where we could hike to the main 74. I waited along the road while Doug rode back camp, picked up the car, and came back to pick me up. All I could think of was Dean talking about the $5000 for a helicopter pickup so I was determined to make it back on my own.

Got it xrayed today and the upper fibia is fractured...yikes. But at least I got one ride on my newly replaced frame. :)

Thanks Liz and the whole crew for a great day even with the broken ending. Doug, you're the man!

    Binh

UPDATE AS REQUESTED: Ok, since I finally got off my ass, here's some pictures of the fibula fracture. Sorry for the fuzziness...it was taken inside the car holding it up to the window. So the fracture turns out to be the small issue. The doctor said the fracture will heal by itself and nothing has to be done but with fractures so high near the knee, the ankle is usually messed up. He looks at my ankle and decides to take x-rays of both ankles. So the gap in between the bones is suppose to be even around all three sides as with the good ankle. The sprainged ankle is not so good. The normal 1/4inch gap is at least 1/2inch wide on the outside and slightly torn on the left as well. So the doctor says in order to not have chronic problems later on, the tendons/ligaments need to be tightened and the bones need to be aligned as they heal. So he's going to pull one tendon side together, put a pin to hold it place, then see if the other side needs a pin as well. So...conclusion: 6 weeks in cast. 6 weeks in a boot. and who know how long in PT. Surgery is scheduled for Thursday morning.

And of course...I'm going to ask for a black and red cast....to match my bike :)

Sorry to hear about your injury. Fortunately, you were with other riders who were able to help. Dean assisted me when I separated my shoulder last year at Quaking Aspens.

    Hopefully you'll recover quickly!

Sorry to hear about your injury!

Is it your tibia or fibula? Tibia is your shinbone. Fibula is the other smaller bone in your lower leg. Just curious.

    Heal up quickly!

damn, bro. sorry. i thought i was having a bad day up to that point.

i came along about 30 seconds after the crash, and binh was already up, just a little dazed. pretty much right from the start he thought he had broken something. but everybody thought he was wrong: "it would hurt a lot more", "it would be a lot more swollen", etc. well, i guess he knew better--which makes the trip back to the road pretty damn impressive. it was about 2 miles, mostly s/t, and he was one-leg pedaling most of the time, but there were some short uphills that he clipped both feet in for...with a broken leg. yowza.

he's a tough dude. i've seen him crash off a waterfall, roll into cactus, and still finish the ride. in his underwear. now that's tough.

healing vibes, man. get better fast. i need my coach.

and healing financial vibes to fyo/dave who had his own misfortune before he even got to the trailhead.
