    +1 on the CORBA Skills Clinic. It may be a bit of a drive, but well worth it if it's still Mark Langton giving the classes. I like his no non-sense style of teaching. He'll first go over and show you the basics then he'll watch as you try to practice the skills. Be warned, he doesn't candy coat his comments, but is very direct and will point out what you are doing wrong if you are. Not in a demeaning or harsh way though.

    Try PM'ing chocobochick or trojaninsomniac. They both live near Sullivan Canyon in Brentwood. I highly recommend this trail for beginners as it has a little of everything to get your feet wet. Very minimal climbing if you stay down in the valley and no way to get lost.

    I would offer to show you around, but I'll be on the DL for at least a month or two or five.

    :welcome: from OC! In addition to the CORBA skills clinic, I'd recommend hooking up with the North Ranch Mountain Bikers (www.nrmbc.org). They do a bunch of rides in your area for all levels and I'm sure you'll pick up a bunch of tips from them. Tamara is one of the groups' leaders and can set you up with an appropriate ride group ([email protected]). Welcome to the tribe!

    I just went to the CORBA Skills Clinic with a beginner female friend of mine. It was perfect! She got to learn some important skills and I got two phone #'s. Best of all - Free!!

    You may want to ride with the folks at Over The Bars MTB Club. They primarily ride in the Verdugos and San Rafael Hills. While the Verdugos always involve some serious climbing, the rides at San Rafael Hills include some really nice single track, are relatively shorter and don;t have that much climbing.
