Hi, I'm new to this forum and to mountain biking. I have a hardtail bike...now, I just need to learn the skills. I would really like to join a group or find a trainer to help me at my beginner level. Please lead me in the right direction. I'm really eager to start learning. :)

Since you are in LA you should head on over to the CORBA skills classes at Malibu Creek State Park. They are held on the first Saturday of every month.

    CORBA Skills Clinic

Also, check out the calendar here on the site and join in on one of the rides, lots of friendly riders here. Just stay away from DinoBrown, he's a bit of a misfit ;)

Hey welcome! I say get out there and ride and have fun!!! thats what its all about...the skills will come with time. The skills class would definitly help out...never took one myself but it can only help. also some decent technique movies out there and and on youtube that may help.

    welcome aboard.

there's no shortage of people here that would help you out. the fullerton loop is probably a good place to start and make some connections. then a class at some point would help you even more.

Does anyone know of any (free) classes in Griffith Park area or Pasadena/SGV area? Those would be the closest for me.

Welcome to STR. If you're ever interested in riding in the OC area, let us know. Lots of beginner trails here and riders of all levels that would be happy to show you around.

i havent gone on one but they have beginner rides on STR...just check in the rides forum. if there is no class in your area just go on those. people ive met out on the trail that were members of this crew were super cool and helpful. im positive if you go on some beginner rides fellow riders would be willing to give you some pointers. I am usually very hesitant to drive anywhere in LA, so I just ride Del Cerro park all the time since its right near me. maybe far for you but if your ever out that way id try to give you as many pointers as i could

Welcome to STR! I live in Los Angeles too, right near Griffith Park and unfortunately, you are not allowed to mountain bike on any of the off-road trails. Tragic, huh?
All those mountains and dirt and none of it legal!#-o

PM me and we'll try and make something work as far as the better "local" trails go, okay?
