I'm having foot surgery for a bunion on Monday. The surgeon said I will be off the bike for 3 to 4 months. I don't want to lose to much endurance, strength, or get fat. Does anyone have any ideas how to keep my endurance(cardio) and strength during recovery? Will be unable too walk much for 6 to 8 weeks. Any ideas or suggestions will be appreciated.

Wow! Off the bike that long for a bunion? There are people with broken legs that are back on the bike in 6 weeks. Unless he's cutting your foot off, I'd say let pain be your guide and pedal a spin bike for 60 to 90 minutes 3 to 4 days a week. Boring, yes. You will gain fitness though for sure!
Otherwise, I guess swimming or maybe rowing. :-k

once the tissue heals enough to get it wet you can swim laps to keep your lungs / fitness up. 13 years ago I crushed both calcaneus (heel bones) and was in a wheel chair for 6 months and water is what got me going again. Also while in the pool you can slowly start weight bearing in the shallow end, gradually increasing how much of your body is out of the water.

So at what point did you decide to have the surgery? I have a bunion in the early stages but not much pain or discomfort yet...

Went to doctors today for a dressing change, they said the incision was healing great and the sweeling would go down soon. I see the surgeon next week and will probably get stitches out and then I can start some rehab. I finally saw the incision site today and thought I would share a picture securedownload-2.jpg

I did a Google image search of "bunion". Some people need to take care of their feet just a little bit. Eww.

That's EXACTLY the one I saw. Reminds me of that scene in either Dumb and Dumber or Kingpin where they had to put a grinder to someone's toe nails to trim them!

Oh, and you get no thanks from me on that one. I was trying to forget the small thumbnail in GIS. Now I have the giant size version in my browser. Some things just cannot be unseen. :-(

I had 5 screws inserted in my foot, 1 pin, and 1 toe fused so that it would not bend again. With what you had you will be back on the bike in absolutely zero time.
