Thanks for all the good wishes. I'll pass them along. I'll try to get her hooked up on our home network today so she can post too. Our computers are upstairs and in her current condition that means they might as well be on another planet.

She gave me a pass to go ride today so she must be feeling a bit more independant.

That's a tough break, keep her pain meds up, it will help with the healing.

All joking aside, it's a sick feeling when you see your loved one 6 feet down in the bottom a wash crumpled up in a heap with their bike on top of them.
There is big wooden post down there with a metal bracket sticking out of the side and she missed it by inches. I may go down and remove that today.

Good for you for taking her out and caring for her when hurt. It'll be bad, because you'll prob be the blame for any pain in her legs the rest of her life :?: but after getting her out safely and doing the dishes (and cooking?) she'll prob forgive ya! Healing vibes her way and to your dish pan hands!

Uggh! Really sorry to hear that. I hate hearing when anyone, especially the women riders get hurt. Hope she heals up fast and gets back on the bike.

Give Jane my best. I know the feeling seeing your wife all crumpled and lyingin the dirt. Been there twice with Nancy ...once at El Moro (big contusions)and once at McGill (broken shoulder). You feel so helpless. Nancy finally gave up biking, she didn't want to get hurt anymore (now hikes).

    Miss seeing you guys!

Jane sends her thanks to everyone for their kind words. Her CT scan came out as expected this morning and she will probably have surgery this Thursday. They took one look at the pictures and said they would have to get over to Home Depot for some more screws.

She's already asking the doc about a time frame for getting back on the bike but he just rolls his eyes and says she shouldn't even think about it for a few months.

We had a 5 day ride in South Dakota planned in July but it looks like we'll be attempting to get our money back on that one.

    Robin,

Having come off of a broken ankle (1 plate, 8 screws), I can say that not being able to be weight bearing is really, really hard. And the pain part makes it...OMG. Those weeks felt like years. Be really nice to your wife.

A friend of mine who had metal rods in her lower and upper leg after a fall from a horse told me about www.mybrokenleg.com. A lot of the posts are by malingerers and can get really depressing so I suggest doing a "mountain bike" search for the more humorous and uplifting accounts. One blog I found had me laughing until I cried: www.ouchmyleg.wordpress.com/2006/05.

That friend of mine was declared healed in half of the 18 months the doctors said she had to go. She did a lot of swimming. She also refrained from taking anti-inflamatories which "they say" (including my doctor) inhibits the bone from healing. I tried no drugs, for about 2 hours. I couldn't take it. She also said to get "European" crutches, the kind where they have bands that wrap around your arms.

If your wife feels the need to talk with one of her own kind tell her to drop me a line and I can also introduce her to my horse riding friend who can tell her that life does get better. Sometimes it helps to talk to someone who has been there.

    Lois

    Quick Update

Got the CT scan results and met with the ortho surgeon today.
CT scan showed that the femur smashed down into the tibia breaking the top and forcing it down into itself which also split the tibia. The doc used the term "pile driver" to decribe what happened.

Surgery tomorrow - plates - screws - and a withdrawl from the bone bank for a graph.

After the surgery she can bend the knee but no weight bearing for at least 6 weeks.

Turns out the dishes are the least of my worries.

By the way, for all you nice folks that asked if there was anything you could do, she said that she would love it if someone would drop off a case of Stone Ruination IPA. She just loves that beer!
