I've got a lot of training riding in this year and so I thought this might be a great time for another big ride. We have a group of 4 so far but I'm sure some will fall out and others will jump in but these rides always work better when we have a group that works together. So does anybody want to join us on our 300 mile ride? Not much climbing but you can expect between 21 to 23 hours in the saddle.

What's wrong with you? I almost thought about this for a second, but then I came to my senses.

300 miles is CRAZY (not quite PBP, but still pretty gnarly). I am looking forward to my first century. I need to put more time in the saddle. 50 miles is the most for me, yet.

I've only done a couple doubles this year, but I have 6 century rides in all with big climbs so I'm hoping this will be enough training.

I'm in. Might think about aero bars for this to give me some more positions. I remember finishing the double last year and thinking how horrible it would be to go another hundred. Oh well. Sounds like a party on wheels.

Camp or hotel before the start? Lowland or highland triple?

Last couple times we just slept at home got up at 1:30 am and drove out. Saves some money and I really wasn't that sleepy after the ride.

I'd go with the upward bend on the aero bars, hotel, and the highland triple...I'd rather climb than slog through a headwind along the 101...although that's a good portion of the triple. Not as much training this year, but after 200 miles, what's another c-note?

I'm inclined to go in...but am going to procrastinate.

I'd love to, but I'm busy that day - whatever day it is, I'm busy.

The only thing I like doing that long is playing blackjack or pai gow.

I used to think 10kft was scary but 20 hours in the saddle is scarier!

I might be in. I will think about it.

I want to do my first 24 hour solo MTb race this year and spending ~20 hours in the saddle on a road bike would be a good warm-up. I also want to do the Furnace Creek 508 sometime soon. So, I guess I should start doing 200+ mile rides as training.

Chris, they recognize the triple as credit to get in the 508. Only problem is your to damn fast. You'll be done a couple hours before us.

I can't verify it but I was told that someone did the triple in 15:10 a few years back. We are intentionally going out with a 7.5 hour century pace for the first century, then a 7 and hoping for another 7 for the last one. With the little amount of climbing on this route we are hoping to maintain a 15 mph which is easy enough for a double but for a triple, it's going to be a lot harder. In order to maintain a 15 mph we will not be staying veery long in the SAG's. Max would be 10 minutes. Climbing those rollers through Malibu is going to be really tough. We have some private SAG support for the last 100, which is allowed. Also so we won't have to carry jackets, food, or lights but when evening comes around we can have our SAG bring them to us.

I am considering doing my first double (the lowland) that day with a few friends. It seems so crazy long I can't imagine adding another 100! Enjoy! Any tips for the double other than keep it at a pace that I think I can finish? I have done the KOM rides and L'Etape du California so I know the big rides, just not the long ones! We are using the double metric Ojai ride as a training ride.

Excellent training rides Beth. Pace of course is the first but right behind that is to have folks to work with. Find a paceline that works for you. If you find one that you feel is going a little to slow this will be the best one for you. I usually ride with knuckleheads who are faster then me and I'm dead by the time we hit the 170 mile mark and have to limp in from there. Other very important factor is calories, how do you eat? I personally try to stay with the Hammer nutrition products until the 150 mile mark then I switch to the available foods the SAGs have. Watermelon, cantalope, Cup O Noodles, V8 juice, Diet Coke all work very well for me. Bring endurolytes, lots of them and start drinking water early and often. Other then that it's mostly a mind thing. Just don't count the miles think of the next SAG instead of total miles to go. Good luck and I'll look for you out there. Try to talk Liz into joining us.
