Was doing the ghetto tubeless tonight. We pumped up the first time and nothing happened. I went in to check the tires a few hours later and the rear wheel lose all of it's air, so i decided to pump it up.

My bro' said we should pump it close to max psi (80 psi). Earlier we did 60.5 psi, I decided to go higher and pumped pass 60 psi when BOOM! Stan tubeless fluid everywhere and on my scion, cabinets, floor, wall, my head, arm, legs, and chest.

My pinky is bruised 'cause I was holding the tire while airing. Other than a big mess and sore finger, I was pretty lucky. NO SAFETY GLASSES and it coulda sprayed over my whole face and take out my eyes.

Gonna try again tomorrow, but I'll be wearing SAFETY GLASSES for sure this time. SAFETY FIRST!!!

Been there and done that. I've since replaced Stan's rim strip with a Maxxis one. Seems to work better.

I went ghetto tubeless on my DH bike, stans strips, 45psi and call it good! Dont put that much pressure in it. Mine has held 45 psi for two weeks and some San Juan runs.

Blew up a Stan's conversion in my garage one night. Kept pumping up the tire until I heard the bead seat and decide to do 1 more pump just in case then KABOOM. I went over the max psi by maybe 1 or 2 pounds. The explosion left me stunned and I ended up with a damaged ear drum. Even bent the rim.

my tire reads max 80 psi. dont believe it. my eardrum did hyrt for a short time. luckily i was holding the wheel on the ground vertically, so it blew up sideways. I was between scion and garage door so I just got backsprayed. I was lucky.

I just redid it and left at 46psi...

Yeah, why the high psi? Higher PSI won't help the Stans seal any better...in fact, lower pressure with multiple inflations (if needed) are better.

    But...

What rim and tire combo are you using? I've done ghetto on my d321 mavics when I had them w/ minions. I pumped it up to 60psi, decreased it, and had a solid seal for bootleg. A buddy of mine told me that you can ghetto tubeless any rim but the most success came from mavic's because the inner lip of the rim is bigger and helps hold and seals the tires better (if i had a cross cut diagram you'd understand better but you can see an example here: http://www.universalcycles.com/shopping/index.php?category=139.
Good luck on your next try.

Single tracks dont have the bead for it.

Weak sauce, spent all night on it too. Tubes are still just a fiver, UST tubeless runs about $400 and won't leave you with white goo dripping from your chin.

I would not re-use that tire tubeless now. The bead is stretched and you'll have nothing but trouble with it burping and possibly causing a crash.

Reason to take it up that high is to get it to seat and to put pressure throughout the tire to get Stans into everywhere possible. Worked for me.

I had a branch/twig about a little bit bigger then a pencil go thru my ATV tire. We put in some slime and it seemed to hold. Today we went riding and the tire went flat again. We were going to call it a day and I noticed I had some Stans in my truck so I told my son, "Let's try this". Put it in and where the Slime failed, Stans came thru for me. But just in case I put a tube in it tonight.

Last night that earthquake you heard about @ 8:30pm. It wasn't an earthquake. It was another ghetto tubeless explosion!!!

We tried it again for the third time. The second time, it was just leaking air at every nipple. Stripped the tape and cleaned up everything and tried it again.

For 30 minutes it would not take air and seal. Finally got it to do so. The stan messed up the reading on my digital pressure reader. We added what I thought was about 45-50psi, when my bro started taking out the schraeder adapter and BOOM!!!

He and I stared at each other stunned at what just had happened. Fortunately this time we had struggled with the wheel so much to get air in, that most of the stan leaked out and the rest spread evenly thin inside. The explosion spray very little stan even though it was on wheel was on the side on a bucket.

    WE BOTH HAD GOGGLES ON!!!

But I think you're right the tire is stretched pretty good. Both times the tires popped of the rim completely after exploding.

We gave up on this tire.

It's a Sun Single Track and Specialized 24" Roller DH tires. The front 26" Roller DH sealed perfectly one time effort no problem. Even to 65psi with no problem. but the tire was a better fit from beginning...

YES WISH I HAD PICS but at the time it wasn't so funny...

i have both 24" and 26" singletrack rims, the air is holding well in the 26" but the 24" has been a problem.

Your tire was also designed to use a tube. Did you read any instructions on going tubeless?

    Stan's INSTRUCTIONS:
inflate the tire to 35-40 psi (never inflate over 40 psi)
