When you weigh 260 and your hardtail weights 34 plus camelbak weighs 10+...you need some psi.

    Or a wider tire.

edit: by that I mean higher air volume.

Wow, I thought I ran my pressure high, When I weighed 340 I didn't run that high of pressure.

When I ride on 2.1 tires, I run 53psi f&r, especially on a hardtail. If the pressure gets below 50, it's a recipe for a pinch flat. Below 48psi and it's almost a guarantee.

With the 2.5's I run now, I can go with 45 in the rear and 40 up front.

Just the way it is for us bigs.

For the loop, a 2.1" is a decent choice for me. Lighter on the climbs and the Loop has a pretty decent trail surface. I think I prefer to ride my old GT hardtail with it's 2.1" tires on the Loop rather than my Reign.

In the end I it's just what works for you, I know that I've been really hesitant with changing the air pressure in my tires and shocks even though my weight has changed.

Interesting thoughts about tire pressure. I know the pressures differ from 26" tires to 29" tires. I can run as little at 28 psi on my Niner. When I race I keep them at 34 psi. Maybe the pinch flat issue is not only about tire pressure. Maybe it also involves the skill level of the rider. I attempt to be light on my bikes. I know Padre is able to run light pressure in his tiress too. He is no small guy either!

I seriously think if you are running 50 plus psi, you should consider your riding style and attempt to work on that. (While knocking on wood) I haven't pinch flatted in several months. I actually can't remember the last time I did. Lucky me I know.

The Fully loop doesn't have any techy obsticles. You should be able to run low pressure there for sure.

    Just my 2 cents

It was nice to see you all there! Sorry I had to cut out early, my hand/shoulder/neck were all giving me issues last night and I couldn't continue the rest of the way.

Good thing Roscoe's was still an option!

Special thanks to Dino and Julia for accompanying me the shortcut back, you guys are great! Thanks for sacrificing your ride.

Ive never pinch flatted....the psi is so im not dragging a boat anchor. Same reason you run higher pressure in your car tires...to get better gas mileage. The guys who usually think its high are most often smaller guys. I always offer to ride their bike with their 25psi so long as im not responsible for the wheels. I can tell you though, dropping down to where im at now, the ride is def smoother but I can tell it takes more effort.

    I'm 220 lbs running 33 psi in my 29er. I ran about 36 psi in my 26er.

Higher tire pressure in a car is great to improve rolling resistance, but there is a point when too high of a tire pressure actually hurts your MPG too. Same goes with bikes, however we also have to consider the improved traction at lower pressures.

If you look at most tires they have a max pressure rating on the side. I know this is mostly for reference and not gospel, but I think 55 psi could pose a safety issue by either damaging the tire or popping it off of the bead.

Kritter, I think you are doing the right thing going to a wider tire and lower pressure.

Easy there 3 for 3 Fully loops with flats!

Big guys have increased normal force so at a higher pressure can have equal traction to small guys with low pressure. Dont make me write a program that will spit out the relations between weight, tire width, pressure and the all mighty output of friction/traction.

All in all im just making excuses for washing out twice...I also forgot I sped up rebound on my fork which could have a major effect on the two washouts I had. You would think me being a shock engineer would have thought of that first.

PS...the larger tire was required since the rims have a psi limit since they are tubeless.

On one of my bikes (5 spot) I like to run the front tire between 20 to 25, but the tire is a wide 2.5 (not a maxxis 2.5 but a real 2.5) I use to run Stans in it and NEVER flatted using this. I've since had to revert back to tubes, but use the slime tubes, and even with the lower pressure I've still have been flat free. So I would agree with the wider tire suggestion. To much pressure will do just the opposite of what you're trying to accomplish. The mfg suggests a pressure of 30 to 40 psi and that's to get optimum results from the tire. All testing is done at these psi's. Running higher pressure also makes the tire lose grip, that might have been some of your problem?

    more psi = faster roll.

    i run like 45 f/r and i weigh 235 on my 29er.

on my 2.5" tired coiler.. i run like 35.

Sam, I think I can still smell that little Water crossing. Thinks for deciding for the rest of us on whether or not to ride that.:-s
