Not sure why you highlighted my sentence about the felony murder rule. That rule specifically applies to allow murder charges to be brought if the death happens while in the commission of a felony, whether or not a murder was intended. One example would be an accidental discharge of a bank robber's gun, killing a bystander. In fact, in that scenario, even the getaway driver waiting outside could be charged with felony murder through their joint undertaking.

Whether you think its fair in this instance is your opinion, but you cannot doubt that if these were not police officers, the DA's office would do what it ALWAYS does to make itself look "tough on crime"... which is to use every legal tool and device available to bring maximum charges, particularly where violence is involved in the commission of the crime. The fact that these techniques are not being implemented here is unfair on its face.

On a side note, kudos to that mother for being socially aware. A while back in my last year of law school, I used to instruct a "street law" course at a local high school, full of underprivileged kids up in northern CA. One of the areas I would touch upon with my lectures would be how to handle basic interactions with the police and knowing your rights. One of the issues I instructed them on was not granting officers permission access their property. One of the students asked why she should do that if she's done nothing wrong. All of the other obvious answers aside, I told her that it was simple: Police officers are strangers. They are not magically made into perfect people when they become an officer. Would you let any stranger walking down the street into your house? No. Then why would you let this stranger into your house if you don't need to. So, back to the original point about taking the candy from the cop - She's just being consistent: never take candy from strangers.

It's shameful that a Mother would teach their child a lesson in ignorance.
I hope the B*tch has a need for the police and help never arrives then maybe her attitude will change.
You should never blame a whole group of people for the (bad) actions of a few of them .
