fixing a stripped rotor bolt hole

I just stripped not one but two rotor bolt holes. Is there a way to save my hub?

It can be fixed. Do you have a Dremel tool?
You can cut a slot and use a screw driver.
I have done that mamy times.
You must use a high quality flat head screw driver it must have a hex at the base by the handle to give you more leverage. Use one hand to push down and the other to twist the wrench.
I have also used the sears easy out kit.

 

I stripped the hole in the hub, not the bolt.

Considering how many people run only 3 of their 6 bolts, presumably to save weight, if you can't fix it, I'd just continue to use it.

 

In worst case drill it out a little bigger and use a heli-coil.

 

I'm impressed that the bolt didn't strip and you were able to torque it down enough to strip the hub holes.

Like bighit said, worst case, drill it out a tad and either heli coil or retap the next size up.

best case, just dont use them.

 

Just take the rotor off! You will go WAY faster! :bang:

 

chase the threads first.... (get a tap.. and try to clean them up)

worst case drill it one size bigger, and helicoil/timesert or rethread it bigger

 

All kidding aside. Some racer types only use three bolts per rotor.

Hey, we're all slow learners at one time or another. As has already been mentioned, tapping it oversize is an option, but you might have to address the bolt head sticking up too high. Is through-bolting an option?

 

It is possible. I think I'm going to try the helicoil thing first. I've also looked at the timesert products. I'm hoping that I can use the same bolts as before. It seems like a cleaner setup. If someone has had experience with the helicoil or the timesert, advice would be apprecaited.

 

Not sure on that rusty( through bolting), might weaken the hub.But, McFadden Dales in orange and Anaheim have all the right threads/pitch/length he would need.Just dont use grade 8.

I would just use 3 bolts like a lot of people have mentioned. That is what i have on my single speed it works fine.

Are you serious????? That's grams....just remove a decal or two. I can't even tell when I'm holding a handfull of brake rotor bolts. :lol:

Not using all the bolt holes will damage the rotor and hub. The current design was intentionally planned that way so the forces involved in braking were shared evenly over the face of the hub, the bolts, and rotor.:bang:

Drilling the hub will weaken the hub structure as well. I'd use that as a second to last resort. If the bolt can't be tapped out, buy a new hub. You'll thank youself later.

Using only three bolts....#-oI heard that if you take out the QR's holding your wheels on that really save you some weight. :lol:

 

I ran a rotor with 5 bolts. It's no problem.
