So with the exception of a 203mm rotor on its way, the "freeride" hardtail i have been working on this year is finished. i am curious how many other hardtail huckers are out there. Post your bikes and their specs!
This one is an '07 Trek 3900 with a Marz 44 Switch TA fork, Hope headset, Hope DH stem, Answer Pro Taper AM low-rise bars, Oury lock-ons, XT brakes with a 203mm front and 180mm rear, XT shifter, Saint cranks, Answer Rove pedals, Saint derailleur, Hope BB, e*13 LG1+ guide, Hope chainring, XT chain, Saint cassette, Hope PROII evo SP hubs on Mavic EX721 rims, Nevegal DH front and rear (2.5/2.35).

Frame from $300 dollar commuter bike with 150mm fork when it had 70mm fork? No thanks.

I love me an AM Hardtail, but is that Trek frame safe for free-riding?

Hope your medical and dental insurance is up to date.

Mfoga is right.....you are gonna tear the headtube off that bike with that fork.

The Trek 3900 is even a real mountain bike....it was designed to be ridden on groomed DG trails and bike paths.

it looks wierd because its an xc frame with high standover/long seattube built up as a freeride hardtail with a longer fork than it was designed for. It may snap when youre hucking.
Look into burlier ht frames like cove stiffee or intense tazer.

that thing looks unsafe! just compare the head tube of your frame, and those of the ones posted above, clearly a very important difference in design!

i guess if you land front-heavy, you're probably right, but i have been hucking >6' on a 105mm Marz for 5 years on that bike. i say freeride, but i am not saying Rampage freeride.
The "long travel" was actually intended to ease the head angle for the gnar descents where a slack head angle makes the bike a lot less twitchy. It proved an accurate hypothesis and was much more steady on the first trail ride (i ride trail at 120mm) and far more ridable all around. As far as the guy who said it wasn't even a mountain bike, the frame on that bike was the same as all the Gary Turner/Trek hardtail bikes of that era that came with 100-120mm forks and higher quality components.
So thank you for your 'concerns,' but my riding style is rooted in trials and i land rear wheel 99% of the time. The sag is set at about 40% so the fork is taking all the stress it can on behalf of the head tube and i only increase my amplitude based on comfortability and quality runs, not based on long-travel suspension.
By the way, i rode rigid the same way but i rode 4" and 6" FS without a care and eventually got bit hard. FS just tended made me a sloppy rider who thought he was invincible. i like making incremental leaps now. i dislike defending my sport to rich-boy neigh-sayers.

That is EXACTLY how i would say it about this bike. i like the P.bikes.
And i do regularly check it for fatigue. The down tube/head tube junction has a beefy gusset and that tubing is butted and THICK. It is actually the wishbone at the seat stay/seat tube junction that i tend to take the most notice. Like i said, i do most of my stressing of the frame on the rear, so it gets most of my attention.

That frame isnt a freeride hardtail frame at all....you are going to either break the frame or your face on that thing......if you want to see what A real freeride hardtail is look into a cove stiffee. But hey if its been working for you great.....but when it breaks (notice i said when and not if) dont be suprised and make sure your insurance bill is paid up to date

The good news is you have nice components for when you get a solid frame! See you on the trails!!
